The Big Data and Internet of Things (IoT) bearing the footprint of IT students whose dedication and hard work were shown during the coveted annual event of the IT Capstone Showcase Afternoon on August 6. Defined as the seminal work of students and displayed in a prototype format rather than the traditional dissertation was quite a game changer of the sort whose aim was to demonstrate the cumulative effect of project-based learning spanning over two years in offering students an opportunity in showcasing their inventions while walking industry partners through their reflective process and demonstrate their acquired skills not limited only to knowledge.
The Capstone Showcase first edition hosted in 2021 witnessed a huge success with many of our students’ pilot projects viewed in a favorable manner that ushered in many of the recipients approached by industry partners to secure full-time employment and armed with this positive response, the second edition was more about reimagining the future of IT through the laborious work of the final year students.
Hosted on October 6, the second edition of the IT Capstone Showcase Afternoon on the achievements of 34 final-year IT students from Polytechnics Mauritius following their academic journey and serving their industry internship. During the event, Big Data Analytics and Internet of Things final-year diploma students presented their cutting-edge, practical ideas on:
- Aquaponic System using IoT devices
- Early Flood Warning System
- Smart Supermarket with market basket analysis
- E-bus pass with RF ID
- Garbage Monitoring System
- Smart IoT Pet Feeder and
- Windsor Hospital Management System
The Chief Guest, Vice-Prime Minister, Minister of Education, Tertiary Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Leela Devi Dookun-Luchoomun hailed the efforts undertaken by the students for displaying their original concepts and Capstone project prototypes. The Minister emphasised that owing to the rapid spread of technology spanning across all industries and the pervasiveness of the digital transformation, thus it’s only fitting that the ICT plays a significant role in the education sector, in particular during the early years.
She further stressed the Government’s steadfast commitment that no student should be left behind calling for developing multiple routes to success while at the same time remarking that it clarifies the significance of technical education and Polytechnics Mauritius.
On the other hand, the CEO at Polytechnics Mauritius Mr. Yamal Matabudul told, “The PML’s pursuit of producing thinking-doers, we don’t only learn; we also act” and in addition to it, the Chairperson of the institute, Professor Theesan Bahorun expressed his gratitude towards the students’ wealth of ability and boundless creativity in devoting six months by resorting to a human-centered approach to solve challenges in the real world.
