HSBC warns Mauritian public of loan scams

HSBC wishes to bring to the attention of its customers and the wider public in Mauritius that fake profile and adverts using the HSBC brand name and logo are in circulation on social media.

These reference “HSBC Banque Internationale – France” and include a loan offer advising that the proceeds will be accessible in the customer’s Mauritian bank account upon payment of an activation fee.

Please note that this is a scam as neither HSBC Mauritius nor HSBC France is offering such facilities and does not communicate product offering in this manner.

HSBC urges its customers and the public to exercise caution to avoid falling prey to such fake loan promises.

If you come across such posts, we recommend that you:

  • Do not respond or call on the phone number provided
  • Do not click on any links
  • Do not make any payment
  • Report the post, advert or page on the concerned social media
  • Report the case to Mauritian Cybercrime Online Reporting System (MAUCORS) on their portal: https://maucorsreport.govmu.org/maucors/open.php

Commenting on the subject, Nitin Ramlugon, Head of Wealth and Personal Banking, HSBC Mauritius, says: “We invite our clients and anyone who has been impacted by such a scam to file a police report. Criminals often exploit reputable institutions like HSBC to target unsuspecting victims. It is important to remain vigilant and in case of doubt, do seek advice from trusted sources.
