Zaahirah Muthy: MIAF is a four-day celebration of art, culture and creativity

As the third edition of the MIAF International Art Fair 2023 is set to start on September 27 at the Vivéa Business Park, Moka Smart City, the founder and initiator of the MIAF, Zaahirah Muthy expressed her sincere gratitude to the partners, sponsors and stakeholders for their unwavering support, which has made MIAF the cornerstone of real cultural innovation. The third edition of the MIAF therefore seeks to move forward with the motto “Accessibility and Appreciation for the arts”. We catch up with Zaahirah before the event is set to kick off and she firmly believes that art is a universal language for connecting people and being a catalyst for social change.  Excerpts:

  1. What can you tell us about the concept of MIAF, which is now in its third edition? What have you learned from the experience of the past 2 years?

The MIAF is an annual event that aims to position Mauritius as an art and cultural destination on the global stage. It has evolved over the past three years, with each edition focusing on different aspects of art and culture. Here’s an overview of what MIAF represents and what has been learned from the experience of the past two years:

Positioning Mauritius as an Art and Cultural Destination: MIAF was conceived with the goal of showcasing Mauritius as not just a beautiful tourist destination but also a hub for art and culture. It seeks to bring international attention to the country’s burgeoning art scene.

  1. Global Participation: MIAF has successfully attracted artists and participants from all over the world, spanning five continents. This international representation helps diversify the art on display and exposes Mauritius to a wide range of artistic influences.
  2. Multi-Disciplinary Art Fair: MIAF is not limited to a single art form or discipline. It likely features a diverse range of artistic expressions, such as visual arts, performance art, and more. This diversity adds richness to the cultural experience it offers.
  3. Educational Opportunities: MIAF is not just an art exhibition; it also serves as a platform for education and networking. Experts and connoisseurs from the international art community are invited to share their knowledge and insights, contributing to the growth of the local art landscape.
  4. Themes and Focus Areas: Each edition of MIAF seems to have a specific theme or focus area. The first edition emphasized the role of art in social change, highlighting the transformative power of artistic expression. The second edition delved into the intersection of art and finance, exploring how art can be an investment. The third edition, as mentioned, focuses on the “Art of Investment” and boasts the participation of renowned auction house Christie’s, which is a significant achievement for a small African country like Mauritius.
  5. Global Recognition: The fact that MIAF has attracted Christie’s, a globally recognized auction house, is a testament to its growing reputation and the increasing recognition of Mauritius as a player in the global art scene.

2. What are the main highlights of the programme for this year?

The MIAF will focus on four axes, in particular the international art exhibition with opening scheduled for 27 September, which will be open to the public from 28 to 30 September. The Conference on “Harnessing Art as an Investment to Catalyze Creative Ecosystem Transformation” will take place on 28 September, to be followed by a cultural visit with the participating artists and invited panellists at the House of Digital Art in Edith, Port-Louis on 29 September.

Another important event of this festival, ‘Tribute to our deceased artists’, will take place at the Eureka house in Moka during the evening of 29 September, in order to pay tribute to artists who are no longer with us, such as Roger Charoux, Said Hossanée, Tristan Bréville and Vaco Baissac.

The MIAF 2023 will close on Saturday 30 September with two special events, ‘Little Picasso’ and ‘Avenue of Artists’.

3. You will be holding a conference on ‘Harnessing Art to Catalyze Creative Ecosystem Transformation, with a representative of Christie’s participating for the first time. How do you see the relationship between art and investment, and why is it relevant for Mauritius?

The Outcome of the Conference focuses on the following:

Art as an Investment: Art has increasingly been viewed as an alternative investment asset class. Historically, people have bought art primarily for its aesthetic and cultural value. However, over the years, art has also proven to be a valuable investment, with the potential for significant financial returns. As an asset class, art can appreciate in value over time, making it attractive to investors.

Cultural and Economic Growth: Investing in art can also contribute to cultural and economic growth in a region. It fosters the growth of local artists and the art industry, which can lead to increased tourism and cultural exchanges. A thriving art market can be a driver of economic activity, which is especially relevant for a place like Mauritius that seeks to position itself as an art and cultural destination.

Attracting International Investors: When a renowned auction house like Christie’s participates in events like this conference, it attracts international attention and potential investors. It signals that Mauritius is a serious player in the global art market. International investors may become interested in Mauritius as a destination to invest in art, leading to increased art-related activities and transactions.

4. How can children participate in this year’s event?

It is our tradition to host the Atelier Little Picasso, every year, this initiative, which falls under the umbrella of MIAF, holds great promise as it seeks to empower vulnerable children through the transformative power of the arts. The central goal is to translate the dreams and aspirations of these children onto canvas, with the guidance and mentorship of skilled artists.

This year we are collaborating with ENL Foundation and empowered 30 children coming from the deprived region of Moka on 30th September at Vivea Business Park where they will be mentored by Artists to paint their buzzling dreams.

5. What would be your message for those thinking of attending the event this year?
