First edition of the Junior Webcup in Mauritius: students to discover their potential in web development

FINAM (Federation of Innovative & Numeric Activities in Mauritius), in co-organisation with the Association Webcup de la Réunion, Objectivity part of Accenture, MCCI Business School, Unity Mauritius and NAFCO Mauritius, and other players in the digital sector, is delighted to announce the kick-off of the very first edition of the Junior Webcup in Mauritius. 

Like its big sister, the 24h by Webcup, the Webcup Junior is a 5-hour web development hackathon for the youngest. The candidate teams, composed of 2 to 4 students, will compete in one of two categories: either the category of Grades 7 to 9 or equivalent or Grades 10 to 13 or equivalent. This competition will be held from December 18 to 21, 2023 at the MCCI Business School in Ebène. 

Ambitious goal: to allow students to discover their potential in web development

The mission of the Junior Webcup is to open the doors of the world of web development to young people from 11 to 18 years old (middle or high school level). Through this 5-hour competition, participants will have the opportunity to discover, develop and present their masterpieces designed in a fun and educational environment.

The first edition of the Junior Webcup in Mauritius aims to:

  • reveal talent by encouraging young people to discover their unknown talents in web development;
  • raise awareness of Web jobs by guiding participants step by step, familiarizing them with the tools and exciting jobs of the Web, during a bootcamp organized beforehand;
  • encourage digital vocations through contact with professionals in this dynamic Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector;
  • contribute to making digital technology accessible by demonstrating that it is within everyone’s reach, regardless of their initial level of knowledge, by promoting inclusive participation.

Practical information

  1. All candidates need to bring their laptop to participate in the Junior Webcup. It is open to all young people in Grades 7 to 13 or equivalent (international middle or high school curriculum), regardless of their field of study or the subjects and options studied.
  2. Information sessions, guides and tools will be provided to help young novices take their first steps into this fascinating world of coding.
  3. Teams, composed of 2 to 4 students, can register in one of two categories, either Grades 7 to 9 or Grade 10 to 13 or equivalent level.

At the end of the 5-hour competition, two winning teams will be rewarded in each category with cash prizes or gifts. In addition, certificates of participation will be issued to all applicants.

The provisional programme is as follows:

  • December 18: soft launch  and preparation bootcamp.
  • December 19: Competition day (5 hours hackathon & presentation in front of a jury panel)
  • December 21: Certificate and award ceremony (10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.).
  • The three days will be held at the MCCI Business School, 51 Rue du Savoir in Ebène.
