Ebene, December 28, 2023: MINDEX is extremely pleased to announce the launch of the first virtual assets marketplace in Mauritius, following the issuance of the relevant licence by the FSC. This is a real game-changer!
MINDEX uses blockchain technology, which has proven its potential to disrupt financial services over the last decade, to allow regulated market players and retail investors who were cautiously awaiting regulated service providers operating under a clear regulatory framework, to confidently embrace these new categories of innovative financial products. The latest licence complements the ecosystem of digital custodian, digital securities exchange and clearing & settlement entities operated by MINDEX to operate a digital assets marketplace that provides users with a central and easily accessible venue where they can discover virtual assets, such as tokenised real-world assets, stablecoins and virtual assets.
With the firm intent of building a complete digital ecosystem for the African region, MINDEX is now well poised to offer a digital custodian, exchange, clearing and settlement facilities as well as a virtual assets marketplace under its three separate licensed group entities in Mauritius. Having enjoyed three decades as a successful IFC, it is now time for a new vision to help Mauritius retain its competitive edge and remain a leader in financial service offerings within Africa for the next 30 years. To achieve this vision, it is a clearly disclosed objective of the government to make Mauritius a regulated FinTech hub of choice for Africa. By issuing relevant licences to MINDEX, the FSC is taking the jurisdiction to the next level by leveraging local skills and capabilities towards fulfilling that goal.
Jessica T. Naga, the CEO of MINDEX and a seasoned commercial barrister, stated: “Investors eying Africa are increasingly looking for quality investment products. By applying for a virtual assets marketplace licence from the Financial Services Commission of Mauritius, MINDEX wanted to give clients all over the world, both retail and institutional, the ability to directly access information for assessing investment opportunities, to crucially then be able to evaluate the expected benefits and associated risks accompanying such opportunities. MINDEX leverages the optimisation capabilities of blockchain technology to facilitate trade and thereby increase well needed liquidity in Africa”.
Manisha Dookhony, Chairperson of MINDEX Limited, Advisor to multiple African governments and Chair of the African Legal Support Facility (ALSF), opined: “Mauritius has been taking firm strides to cement its objective of becoming the regulated centre for virtual assets in Africa and beyond. The award of this latest licence to MINDEX takes us to the next level in acting as a trusted intermediary by proposing a set of tools and services to facilitate secure transactions among the different players – be it issuers, investors, the marketplace operator, and possibly other service providers. This is undoubtedly a game-changer for Mauritius.”
Christian Angseesing, Chairman of the Board of MINDEX Digital Custodian Limited and CEO of the Executive Services Group, amongst the most established Mauritian corporate secretarial business, lauded the new licences issued by the FSC as a clear signal that Mauritius is entrenching itself as the FinTech hub of choice for Africa, noting that: “Mauritius is proactively supporting innovation and new technologies, towards creating a marketplace that brings together investors from different economies across Africa and helps realise the potential of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).”
