Absa Mauritius Makes History: First-Ever Tap & Pay

Absa Mauritius shatters boundaries and redefines convenience with the launch of Absa Pay – the island nation’s first-ever Tap & Pay solution. This groundbreaking program, currently available on Android devices, empowers Mauritians to experience a completely digital and secure way to pay.

Absa Pay marks a significant milestone for Mauritius, positioning us at the forefront of the digital payments experience and strengthen the bank’s ambition to be a leading digital financial institution. Absa, the first mover within the Absa Group, proudly introduces this innovative technology that eliminates the need for physical cards. It emphasises the bank’s objective to provide its clients a service of excellence.

Commenting on this new milestone, Jean Noel Samy Head of Cards at Absa Mauritius says: ‘’We operate in a dynamic context where we constantly need to rethink how we serve our customers and offer solutions that meet their expectations. With Absa Pay, our initiative is driven by the overarching goal of maintaining our leadership in innovation and meeting the diverse needs of our customers, both locally and across the African continent. We are aware that this marks a major turning point for our current and future customers as well as for merchants. It’s a first in Mauritius, and we are proud to be the first bank to introduce this technology and new payment experience.’’

How does Absa Pay work?

The Absa Pay solution enables you to register any of your debit or credit cards available on your Absa Mobile Banking App for a Tap to Pay feature. This transforms your mobile phone into a secure purchasing tool, offering hassle free transactions with a simple touch, tap, and pay. Just tap your phone on any Near Field Communication terminal (NFC) to complete your transaction. In addition, customers will be able to view the full list of all tokens related to their card on the Absa Mobile Banking App with the ability to suspend or cancel the tokens.

Why choose Absa Pay?

• Leave your wallet at home: Generate a secure digital version of your Absa card directly from your Absa Mobile Banking app. No need to carry your physical card!

• Tap. Pay. Go: Simply tap your Android phone on any Near Field Communication (NFC) terminal to complete your purchase in seconds. This mean swifter payment and a smoother shopping experience.

• Enhanced security:  The use of a unique identifier protects your card data against the risk of fraud.

• Full control: Manage your Absa Pay digital cards directly in the application. View the list of all your digital cards, suspend, or cancel them at any time.

Benefits that go beyond convenience

Absa Pay not only makes life easier but it also benefits businesses:

• Faster transactions: Faster checkouts lead to greater customer satisfaction and higher turnover rates.

• Reduced cash handling: Minimise the risks associated with cash handling and streamline business operations.

• Reduce fraud: Absa Pay’s security features minimise the risk of fraudulent transactions.

With the proliferation of smartphones and the availability of high-speed data, the world is rapidly moving towards smartphone-based contactless payment solutions. “At Absa Mauritius, we are committed to simplifying our customers’ lives by delivering innovative and contactless digital services through our mobile app. A few years ago, we became the first bank in Mauritius to introduce the ATM QR Cash feature on the Absa Mauritius App, allowing our customers to make cardless withdrawals at Absa ATMs using QR codes. Following this, we launched the QR Scan & Pay feature on our app, enabling our customers to conveniently scan any MauCAS QR code and make instant payments to any store in Mauritius directly from the app. Now, with Absa Pay, we are at the forefront of contactless card payments. This feature enables our customers to use their NFC-enabled Android smartphones to make instant payments by simply tapping their smartphones at payment terminals. This innovation revolutionizes in-store payments, offering unparalleled convenience and security. It allows for faster and more efficient transactions without the need for physical cards, significantly enhancing the shopping experience.” says Sandeep Mohapatra, Head of Digital Transformation and Technology.
