Ocorian in Mauritius contributes to the effort in habitat restoration

Ocorian, a leading global provider of financial services, has established its commitment to supporting Mauritian Wildlife Foundation’s (MWF) habitat restoration on Ile aux Aigrettes.

Earlier this month, a committed team of 30 Ocorian staff members travelled to Ile aux Aigrettes, to assist MWF to weed invasive alien plants and pot native seedlings, in the effort to restore rare endemic species.

Ocorian has provided equipment for the tortoise project, a MWF initiative which aims to restore the lost plant-tortoise interactions and help re-create a self-sustainable ecosystem by using Aldabra giant tortoises as an ecological replacement for the extinct Mauritian tortoises. Ocorian also provided binoculars to the flora team so that they can observe the fruiting and flowering of tall endemic trees and backpacks, field boots, trousers, hats and raincoats were donated to MWF’s staff. In addition, Ocorian has funded the upgrading of the plant nursery roof on Ile aux Aigrettes.

Ocorian prides itself on empowering its employees to engage in environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives that resonate with their personal values and create a positive impact locally. Restoring biodiversity was a testament to Ocorian’s dedication to sustainable practices and its role as a responsible corporate citizen in Mauritius.

Vikash Tatayah, Conservation Director of the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, met staff of Ocorian on the island and shared his appreciation of the team’s support to conservation. “I would like to thank Ocorian for the generous donation of equipment that will help our staff in the field. Financial institutions such as Ocorian are a key link in efforts to restore our biodiversity through corporate sustainability initiatives.”

Robert Hovenier, Head of Global Client Operations and Managing Director at Ocorian in Mauritius said: “At Ocorian, we’re not just about numbers; we’re about making a real difference. The passion and commitment shown by our team in the habitat restoration project of Ile aux Aigrettes reflects our collective dedication to sustainability and positive impact. I couldn’t be prouder of our volunteers who rolled up their sleeves and made a tangible difference.”
