In a world often characterised by fast-paced living and constant pressure, mental health has taken centre stage. To shed light on this crucial topic and promote awareness, LetsBe’s esteemed psychologist Sanjana M Gobin-Rambhojun led a Mental Health First Aid workshop on October 10th at Nouvelle Usine. This event was a testament to the power of open dialogue and empathy in fostering a healthier society, as it falls on World Mental Health Day 2024.
The workshop was a far cry from the traditional lecture format. It was an immersive experience, designed to create a safe and supportive environment for participants to share their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. From the moment the workshop began, it was evident that this was no ordinary gathering. The room was filled with an energy that was both palpable and infectious.
Sanjana, with her warm and engaging demeanour, skilfully guided the participants through a series of exercises and discussions. She encouraged everyone to be authentic and vulnerable, creating a space where it was okay to be imperfect. The workshop quickly transformed into a living, breathing organism, fuelled by the raw emotions and honest conversations of its participants.
One of the most striking aspects of the workshop was the way it challenged traditional notions of mental health. It wasn’t just about understanding the symptoms of various mental health conditions; it was about recognising the interconnectedness of our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. Sanjana emphasised the importance of self-awareness and self-compassion, reminding participants that it’s okay to not be perfect.
“Mental health is not a destination,” Sanjana explained, “It’s a journey. And like any journey, it’s filled with ups and downs. The key is to be kind to yourself and to seek support when you need it.”
The workshop also highlighted the importance of empathy and understanding. Participants were encouraged to listen actively and to validate the experiences of others. By creating a culture of empathy, we can break down the stigma surrounding mental health and create a more supportive society.
“We all have a role to play in promoting mental health,” Sanjana said. “Whether it’s through listening to a friend, reaching out to someone in need, or simply taking care of ourselves, we can all make a difference.”
As the workshop drew to a close, it was clear that it had left a lasting impression on its participants. They had not only learned about mental health but had also experienced firsthand the power of connection and empathy. The workshop was a testament to the fact that even in the face of adversity, we can find strength, resilience, and hope.
LetsBe’s commitment to mental health is evident in its efforts to create spaces where individuals can feel supported, understood, and empowered. The Mental Health First Aid workshop was just one example of the organisation’s dedication to promoting well-being and fostering a healthier society.
