Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), an innovative joint-venture institution located in Suzhou, China, is set to participate in the Annual International Study Fair 2024, organised by Campus Abroad Mauritius. The event will take place on November 23 and 24, providing a unique platform for prospective students to explore study abroad opportunities. Ms. Zoe Yao, a representative of XJTLU, shared her insights on what students can expect from the university’s involvement in this prestigious event.
A unique educational experience
XJTLU offers a distinctive educational environment by blending the academic strengths of Xi’an Jiaotong University in China with the University of Liverpool in the UK. This partnership allows students to experience the best of both Chinese and Western academic traditions.
When asked about the advantages of studying at a joint-venture university like XJTLU, Ms. Yao explained on its international approach. “XJTLU is a truly international university,” she said. “We teach 100% of our courses in English, so students don’t need to worry about Chinese language skills initially. International students will study alongside local Chinese students in a fully English-speaking environment.”
In addition to the linguistic and cultural diversity, students at XJTLU graduate with a UK degree from the University of Liverpool, a member of the prestigious Russell Group of universities. “This means students receive a world-class education at a more affordable price compared to studying directly in the UK,” Ms. Yao noted. “It’s a unique opportunity for students to earn a globally recognized degree while experiencing life in China.”
XJTLU also offers additional benefits, such as Chinese language courses. Ms. Yao emphasised the importance of learning the local language: “Learning Chinese will help students boost their future employability, and it will open doors for them to explore more of the world.”
Integrating Chinese and western educational approaches
One of the core strengths of XJTLU is the integration of both Chinese and Western educational approaches, providing students with a comprehensive learning experience. “We are the result of a historic partnership between Xi’an Jiaotong University and the University of Liverpool,” Ms. Yao explained. “This collaboration enhances our academic reputation, as we combine the best of East and West to offer students a unique educational experience that prepares them to be future leaders.”
This synthesis of academic traditions ensures that XJTLU students are equipped with the skills and knowledge to thrive in an interconnected global environment.
Supporting international students
XJTLU understands that adjusting to life in China can be a significant challenge for international students, and the university offers robust support to help students settle in. Ms. Yao shared several key services that ensure students feel welcome from the moment they arrive: “We provide pre-arrival information on our website, including visa details, and organise online events before students arrive in China. Our international student support team is available to assist with any issues students might face.”
Additionally, XJTLU provides an airport pickup service, which gives new students peace of mind upon arrival. The university also runs a buddy program, where senior students mentor newcomers to help them adapt to life in Suzhou and at XJTLU.
For Mauritian students, XJTLU offers a special free Chinese language summer school. “This four-week program, running from July to August, helps international students pick up basic Chinese language skills while also familiarising them with Chinese culture through field trips and cultural activities,” Ms. Yao said. “It’s a great way for students to meet new people and get acquainted with their new university, new city, and new country.”
Industry partnerships and career development
XJTLU’s connection to the professional world is one of its key strengths. The university has built strong relationships with industries both locally in Suzhou and beyond, providing students with significant opportunities for internships, practical experience, and career development. “Most of our schools and departments have strong industry links,” said Ms. Yao. “For instance, our Business School works with many companies through corporate training programs, job fairs, and more.”
In addition, XJTLU’s external mentor system allows senior students to choose career advisors from their desired field or industry, creating a direct link between students and professionals. “These mentors help bridge the gap between academia and industry,” Ms. Yao explained.
Furthermore, XJTLU’s Taicang campus offers an industry-led education model, where each program has its own industry partner. “This ensures that students are prepared for real-world challenges by learning directly from industry leaders,” Ms. Yao added.
For students interested in research, XJTLU offers the Summer Undergraduate Research Fund (SURF), which allows undergraduate students to participate in mini research projects under the guidance of academic staff. “This is a great way for students to explore their passion for research and discover fields they may want to pursue professionally,” Ms. Yao said.
Cultural exchange and international mobility
Cultural exchange is at the heart of XJTLU’s mission. The university fosters a diverse and inclusive community with staff from over 70 countries and a student body representing a wide array of cultures. Ms. Yao highlighted the importance of this diversity: “Our diverse international community encourages the exchange of ideas, broadening students’ perspectives and helping them develop a global outlook.”
Additionally, XJTLU offers its students opportunities for international mobility. “We have a large number of partner universities around the world, including the University of Liverpool, and every academic year, students can participate in exchange programs, visiting programs, and summer schools,” Ms. Yao noted. “We also celebrate our diversity through events like International Day, where students share their cultures and traditions with one another.”
Career support for international students
For international students, career support is crucial to ensuring they transition successfully into the workforce, both in China and globally. XJTLU offers extensive career services, including workshops, CV editing, mock interviews, and job fairs. “We offer a variety of activities throughout the academic year to help students with their job search,” Ms. Yao explained.
In particular, XJTLU’s career services team organises special events for international students. “We run dedicated career events for international students, including CV editing sessions and mock interviews. Our Global Office helps students prepare their documentation and navigate legal requirements related to their work status,” she said.
For students in emerging industries, XJTLU’s Taicang Entrepreneur College offers specialised programs. “These programs are designed to connect students with industry partners who help them tackle real-world challenges,” Ms. Yao explained. “It’s an excellent opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience while solving problems that are directly relevant to industry needs.”
With its unique blend of Chinese and Western educational traditions, strong industry connections, and a comprehensive support system for international students, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University offers a one-of-a-kind academic experience. Prospective students attending the Annual International Study Fair 2024 will have the chance to learn more about what XJTLU offers and how the university can help them achieve their academic and career goals.
As Ms. Yao concluded, “We look forward to meeting future students at the fair and showing them the incredible opportunities that await them at XJTLU. Our goal is to nurture future leaders who are prepared to make a global impact.”
