Exploring the benefits of studying in the U.S: Insights from Omar Ratib, Assistant Recruitment Director at INTO University Partnerships

By Shruti Menon Seeboo

The United States continues to be one of the most sought-after destinations for international students seeking high-quality education, vibrant cultural exchange, and abundant career opportunities. With its prestigious universities, world-class faculty, cutting-edge research facilities, and diverse cultural landscape, the U.S. stands out as a top choice for students around the world. To better understand why, we spoke with Omar Ratib, Assistant Recruitment Director at INTO University Partnerships, who shared his insights into the unparalleled advantages of studying in the U.S. and the experiences international students can expect.

Why the U.S. is still the top choice for international students

When it comes to higher education, the United States boasts some of the world’s most prestigious institutions, and its education system is renowned for its quality, flexibility, and innovation. Omar explains that this is one of the primary reasons why the U.S. remains an attractive destination for international students. “U.S. universities are consistently ranked among the best globally, and the breadth of programs they offer is vast,” he says. “Whether you are pursuing a degree in engineering, business, the arts, or medicine, the U.S. provides exceptional options.”

What sets the U.S. apart is the breadth of academic opportunities and the ability to tailor one’s studies. The U.S. offers a wide range of academic disciplines, each supported by state-of-the-art resources. This academic freedom allows students to combine disciplines or choose courses outside their major, ensuring that they receive a well-rounded education. Omar emphasises this flexibility: “Students in the U.S. aren’t confined to a rigid structure. They can explore diverse fields of study, and many find that their interests evolve and shift during their time at university.”

One of the key advantages of studying in the U.S. is the access to cutting-edge research and technology. Many U.S. universities are leaders in scientific and technological research, with opportunities for students to participate in groundbreaking projects. This is especially beneficial for students in fields like engineering, biotechnology, and computer science, where innovation plays a central role in education and career opportunities. “The research opportunities here are unparalleled,” Omar says. “For many international students, these opportunities allow them to engage with world-renowned professors and work on projects that shape the future.”

Another unique aspect of U.S. higher education is the emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving. Unlike more rigid educational systems, U.S. universities encourage students to think independently, ask questions, and challenge assumptions. This academic environment helps prepare students for the complexities of the modern world, where creative problem-solving and adaptability are highly valued by employers. Omar explains, “The focus on critical thinking and creativity is what sets U.S. education apart. Students leave equipped not just with knowledge, but with the skills to navigate an ever-changing global economy.”

Diversity and cultural exposure: A key benefit

The U.S. is home to people from virtually every corner of the globe. This cultural diversity is reflected in its university campuses, which attract students from all over the world. As Omar notes, this multicultural environment is one of the biggest advantages of studying in the U.S. for international students. “In a typical U.S. university classroom, you will find people from various countries, cultures, and backgrounds. This diversity creates a rich learning experience where students can exchange ideas, challenge their own assumptions, and learn to appreciate different perspectives,” he says.

For international students, the chance to interact with peers from diverse backgrounds helps broaden their horizons and enhances their social and cultural understanding. Omar highlights that this cultural exchange also plays a critical role in students’ personal development. “Living and studying in such a diverse environment not only enhances your academic experience but also helps you become more adaptable, open-minded, and prepared for global citizenship. These are skills that are increasingly important in today’s interconnected world,” he explains.

Moreover, students who study in the U.S. often gain an appreciation for different cultures, which is invaluable in both their personal and professional lives. They are exposed to a variety of viewpoints and ideas that they might not have encountered back home, and this exposure helps them develop empathy and cultural competency. “These experiences are transformative,” says Omar. “Students often leave the U.S. with a broader understanding of the world, making them more competitive in the global job market.”

Cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Washington D.C. are known for their vibrant multicultural environments, offering international students the chance to experience a blend of cultures, food, art, and entertainment. Additionally, these urban hubs host major global businesses, nonprofits, and creative industries, offering unique cultural and professional networks.

Beyond academics: The holistic student experience in the U.S.

While academics are the primary reason for pursuing higher education, the U.S. offers students a rich, holistic experience that goes far beyond the classroom. Omar emphasises that U.S. universities encourage students to get involved in a wide range of extracurricular activities, including clubs, sports, volunteer work, and leadership opportunities. “Extracurricular activities are an essential part of student life in the U.S.,” he explains. “They offer students a chance to develop leadership skills, form lifelong friendships, and gain practical experience in areas like teamwork, communication, and project management.”

Through involvement in campus clubs, sports, and other activities, students build networks that are valuable both personally and professionally. Networking with peers, professors, and professionals helps students to secure internships, job opportunities, and mentorship. Omar highlights that U.S. universities are designed to foster these connections, and this holistic approach contributes significantly to students’ future success. “The U.S. is a country that believes in the value of well-rounded individuals,” he says. “By participating in campus activities and engaging with others outside the classroom, students gain experiences that are just as valuable as their academic achievements.”

Additionally, Omar points out that sports play a major role in U.S. college life. Many U.S. universities have highly competitive sports teams, and participation in sports offers students a sense of community and belonging. For international students, joining sports teams or recreational clubs can be a great way to meet new people, improve language skills, and immerse themselves in the campus culture.

A student-centered approach to learning and support

One of the defining features of U.S. higher education is its student-centered approach, which emphasises personalised support and holistic development. Omar notes that universities in the U.S. prioritise student success, providing resources to ensure that students thrive both academically and personally. “U.S. universities invest heavily in student support services. Whether it’s academic counselling, mental health services, or career advice, students are never left to navigate their challenges alone,” he says.

This support system is especially beneficial for international students, who may face unique challenges, such as adjusting to a new culture, language barriers, or navigating the complex visa and immigration processes. The U.S. offers a variety of student visa types and work-study opportunities that support international students in their academic and career goals.

The most common visa for international students is the F-1 visa, which allows students to attend full-time academic studies at a U.S. university. The F-1 visa also permits students to engage in Optional Practical Training (OPT), a period during which they can work in the U.S. related to their field of study, typically lasting up to 12 months for most disciplines (or up to 36 months for STEM graduates). This provides international students with the chance to gain valuable professional experience in the U.S., making them more competitive in the global job market.

Another visa type is the J-1 visa, often used for students in exchange programmes or those participating in specific academic programmes that involve practical training. J-1 holders can also work under certain conditions, but they are typically tied to programmes sponsored by an institution or organisation. Additionally, the M-1 visa is available for students pursuing non-academic or vocational programmes.

In addition to these visas, the U.S. government offers the Federal Work-Study (FWS) programme, which allows students on an F-1 visa to work part-time on or off campus while studying. These jobs often help students cover living expenses or gain relevant work experience. Many universities also offer on-campus employment, including positions in libraries, dining halls, and administrative offices. These opportunities provide international students with both financial support and practical experience, contributing to their overall academic journey.

Internships and career opportunities: A stepping stone to success

Internships are a major component of the U.S. education system, and for international students, these experiences are invaluable for both academic and professional development. Omar emphasises the role that internships play in shaping students’ careers. “Internships provide students with the opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world situations,” he says. “They also allow students to develop a network of professional contacts, which is crucial when it comes to finding full-time employment after graduation.”

Internships in the U.S. are highly competitive, and many international students find that they can secure internships with some of the most prestigious companies in the world. Whether in the fields of technology, finance, healthcare, or media, U.S. companies are eager to hire skilled, talented international students. For students who perform well in internships, there is often a clear path to full-time employment. “Many international students stay in the U.S. after graduation because they are able to secure a work visa through the connections they’ve made during internships,” Omar explains. This makes U.S. degrees particularly valuable for students who wish to pursue long-term careers in the country.

For students who return to their home countries after graduation, initiatives like INTO’s “Return & Connect” initiative provide invaluable support. This programme facilitates links between graduates and global employers, creating pathways for career advancement in their home countries. It helps students not only academically but also in securing professional opportunities and enhancing their global outlook. “INTO’s efforts go beyond just providing education; they create global networks that allow students to succeed no matter where they are located after graduation,” says Omar.

In addition to internships, many students also gain international work experience through programmes such as OPT. This allows international students to work in the U.S. for a period after completing their degree, providing them with even more hands-on experience and increasing their chances of securing permanent employment. These work experiences make them highly attractive to global employers looking for talent with a global mindset, proficiency in English, and the ability to work across cultures.

The U.S. is home to a wide range of industries, from tech and finance to healthcare and entertainment. Cities like Silicon Valley (California), Boston (Massachusetts), and Seattle (Washington) are particularly known for strong job markets in technology and innovation, while cities like Washington D.C. and New York City excel in policy, finance, and global relations. Many universities in these regions offer strong career services and internships, providing students with hands-on experience that can lead to career opportunities.

The path to career success: Networking and global opportunities

For international students, a U.S. education is often seen as a passport to a successful career. Omar underscores that employers worldwide recognize the value of a U.S. degree and the skills that students acquire while studying there. “U.S. universities produce graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also skilled in areas like leadership, communication, and innovation,” he says. “These qualities are highly sought after by employers globally.”

Moreover, U.S. universities have extensive alumni networks that help graduates connect with professionals in their field. Omar highlights the importance of these networks in launching a successful career. “Alumni networks are a key resource for students looking to make connections in their industry,” he explains. “These networks often open doors to job opportunities that would not be available otherwise.”

Additionally, the global nature of the U.S. education system means that international students are often well-equipped to work anywhere in the world. Many multinational companies value the international exposure that U.S. graduates bring, knowing that these students can adapt to different cultures and work environments. “A U.S. education gives international students a competitive edge no matter where they decide to work,” says Omar. “It opens doors to global opportunities.”

A world of opportunities

In conclusion, studying in the U.S. offers international students far more than just a world-class education. The combination of academic excellence, a diverse cultural environment, extensive career opportunities, and a strong support system makes the U.S. an ideal destination for students seeking a transformative experience. Whether through the flexibility of academic programs, the rich extracurricular life, or the professional opportunities available, students who study in the U.S. are prepared to succeed in an increasingly competitive and globalized world.

As Omar Ratib of INTO University Partnerships states, “The U.S. provides an environment where students can grow intellectually, personally, and professionally. The experiences gained here not only shape their future careers but also prepare them to contribute meaningfully to the world.” For international students seeking to embark on a journey of academic, professional, and personal growth, the U.S. continues to be a place where dreams can become reality.
