Rogers Capital celebrated twin milestones on December 2 with the official launch of the Rogers Capital Finance & Tax Academy and by ushering in the 4th anniversary of the creation of Rogers Capital Tax Specialists Ltd.
The event, held at Restaurant Zakadi in Vivea Business Park, Moka, was graced by eminent personalities such as the Honourable Muhammad Reza Cassam Uteem, Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations; Mr. Bobby Yerkiah, Chairman of the International Fiscal Association (IFA); Mr. Gilbert Espitalier-Noël, Chief Executive Officer of ENL Group; and Ms. Anju Goburdhone, Section Head at Mauritius Revenue Authority.
The opening address was delivered by Shameemah Abdool Raman, Head of the Finance & Tax Academy, who stated,“This year marks the beginning of an exciting journey as we open the doors of the Finance & Tax Academy to learners, to professionals, to tax practitioners, to lawyers or to anyone who wants to start their career in tax or who wants to progress in their tax career. Our academy is designed to meet the growing demand for robust tax education expertise across all levels. We offer a comprehensive curriculum with a variety of programmes fit for everyone. We have our foundation tax programme, the Fundamentals of Mauritius Tax, The Intermediate Tax Courses, followed by the Advanced Course in International Taxation that prepares the candidates for the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation.”
She went on to explain that the Academy possesses a good blend of well-reputed tax experts based both locally and internationally, and features collaborations with world-class organisations such as BMR Legal India. Shameemah noted that she sees no better way to inculcate a passion of taxation in the growing generation other than through education. With tax often being imbued with a negative connotation, she underlined that the approach to tax will only change through the right tax education, to guide the right actions and build better tax morale across the country.
She concluded, “The aim of the academy is to create a pool of tax experts ready to navigate tomorrow’s challenges. Our goal is clear: To shape and nurture tax professionals starting from the basics and growing into highly skilled tax practitioners. We are committed to ensuring that every student who passes through our doors lives not just with knowledge but with the confidence and capability to make a real impact in their field.“
Celebrating four years of Rogers Capital Tax Specialists
Ryan Allas, Managing Director for Tax, Rogers Capital, highlighted the achievements of Rogers Capital Tax Specialists Ltd over the four years of its operation.
He explained, “Rogers Capital Tax is a founding member of the Tax Africa Network, which spans 22 countries, offering personalised solutions for businesses venturing into Africa. This initiative exemplifies our commitment to collaboration and innovation on the global stage. Through our motto, Tax Made Simple, we try to make tax as simple as possible. We view other tax professionals not as our competitors, but as our collaborators. Because if we share knowledge with all of them, it stands to benefit the financial services sector in Mauritius. Our true competitor is not in Mauritius but in Singapore, Dubai, and Israel.”
He concluded by emphasising the expectations of tax professionals from authorities for a balanced approach that fosters a business-friendly environment while ensuring fairness in taxation.
Contributing to an MIFC of substance and sophistication
Kabir Ruhee, CEO, Rogers Capital, heralded the official launch of the Rogers Capital Finance & Tax Academy as a response to the growing needs of an increasingly sophisticated Mauritius International Financial Centre (MIFC).
He noted: “In today’s era of heightened global scrutiny and rapidly evolving financial landscapes, enhancing the sophistication, breadth and depth of our capabilities is no longer a choice but a necessity. Our academy is a response to this need, designed to simplify and demystify the often complex and intimidating concepts of finance and taxation. By equipping professionals with advanced skills and insights, we aim to elevate standards and reaffirm Mauritius as a jurisdiction of excellence and repute. We are not merely creating an academy, but also fostering a culture of learning, empowerment and progress that will resonate across the MIFC and beyond.”
On the occasion of the fourth anniversary of Rogers Capital Tax Specialists, established on December 2, 2020, he went on to highlight that founding Rogers Capital Tax was not simply a bold move, but also a visionary one. He echoed Ryan in noting that this milestone positioned Rogers Capital as the founding member of the Tax Africa Network, which now comprises 17 members across 22 territories, and is arguably one of the largest networks of tax advisors to have emerged within the continent.
“This platform fosters collaboration, knowledge sharing and excellence, aligning seamlessly with our vision for Mauritius to emerge as a leading hub of financial expertise in Africa and beyond,” he emphasised.
He thanked the Minister of Labour and Industrial Relations, the Honourable Muhammad Reza Cassam Uteem, who subsequently spoke of his own professional experience and insights in the tax domain, for his contribution and leadership as a respected professional and thought leader in the financial services industry.
Mr Ruhee concluded, “As we embark on this exciting chapter with the launch of the Rogers Capital Finance & Tax Academy, let us remember that the journey to excellence is built on collaboration, innovation and an unwavering commitment to delivering value, depth and substance.”
