In the sun-drenched island of Mauritius, where the vibrant spirit of sports thrives, Babita Bucktowutsing stands as a pivotal figure in the evolution of tennis administration. As the Assistant Administrative Secretary of the Mauritius Tennis Federation (MTF), a role she has passionately embraced since February 15, 2005, her journey is a testament to the transformative power of dedication and the growing influence of women in sports. Residing in the tranquil locale of Saint Pierre, she balances her professional life with her roles as a devoted wife and mother of two young adults, all while contributing significantly to the Mauritian tennis landscape.
“Over the past 20 years, we have seen a significant transformation in women’s tennis and sports administration in Mauritius,” Bucktowutsing reflects, her voice imbued with a sense of pride and accomplishment. One of the most profound shifts, she observes, has been the marked increase in women assuming coaching and leadership positions. The MTF has been instrumental in fostering this change, actively encouraging girls to participate in tournaments and creating a safe and supportive training environment. The introduction of female coaches, in particular, has been a game-changer, providing young female athletes with mentors who understand their unique needs. “Female coaches tend to be more nurturing and attentive, which fosters confidence among young players,” she explains, highlighting the nuanced approach women bring to coaching. This shift, she believes, is rooted in a growing societal awareness of gender equality and a concerted effort to make sports more inclusive at every level.
Bucktowutsing’s own career trajectory is a narrative of overcoming obstacles and asserting her voice in a traditionally male-dominated arena. “As an Assistant Administrative Secretary, I have encountered various challenges in my career, but each has been a learning experience,” she shares, her tone reflective. Managing the intricate logistics of national and international tournaments, juggling diverse responsibilities, and serving as the federation’s Public Relations Officer have all contributed to her professional growth. While there were moments when she had to assert her decisions and ensure her voice was heard, she emphasises, “I have always felt valued in my workplace, and my opinions have been actively considered in decision-making processes.” This experience has solidified her conviction that confidence, proactivity, and resilience are indispensable qualities for women seeking to effect meaningful change in sports administration.
The MTF’s commitment to gender equality is not merely rhetorical; it is manifested in tangible initiatives. The strategic recruitment of female coaches, notably the two appointed since January, has profoundly impacted the training environment for young girls. “Since January, we have employed two female coaches to ensure that female athletes feel at ease during training,” Bucktowutsing reiterates. The federation also champions equal opportunities for male and female players across competitions, coaching, and leadership roles, actively dismantling gender stereotypes and encouraging greater female participation.
For young women aspiring to carve out a career in sports administration, Bucktowutsing offers invaluable counsel. “Women have proven to be excellent leaders in every field, and sports administration is no exception,” she asserts, her voice imbued with encouragement. She urges them to cultivate confidence, assertiveness, and proactivity, emphasising the unique strengths women bring to leadership roles, such as approachability, empathy, and effective communication. “I have personally enjoyed my career because I have always felt supported and involved in key decision-making processes,” she adds, underscoring the fulfilling nature of the field.
Yet, Bucktowutsing acknowledges that the journey towards complete gender equality in Mauritian tennis and sports is ongoing. Persistent challenges remain in areas such as participation rates, representation in leadership positions, and media coverage. “Gender equality in sports is essential for promoting fair play, inclusivity, and empowering women and girls,” she states, her tone earnest. She advocates for increased female representation in decision-making roles and greater media visibility for female athletes. “More efforts are needed to encourage media visibility for female athletes, as representation in sports coverage can inspire the next generation of girls to pursue their sporting dreams.”
One of the most inspiring achievements Bucktowutsing has witnessed is the remarkable success of Mauritian tennis player Marine Giraud. “As a WTA player, she has continued to excel despite the challenges of balancing professional sports with motherhood,” she shares, her voice filled with admiration. Giraud’s resilience and passion serve as a powerful beacon for young girls aspiring to excel in tennis. Looking ahead, Bucktowutsing envisions more initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, such as seminars and workshops, and concerted efforts to educate parents about the importance of sports for their daughters. “Addressing these societal barriers will contribute to the continued growth of women in sports,” she concludes, her tone hopeful.
The noticeable surge in female participation in Mauritian tennis is a direct result of the MTF’s proactive approach. “Yes, there has been a noticeable increase in the participation of girls and women in tennis over the years,” Bucktowutsing affirms. This shift is driven by a confluence of factors, including heightened awareness of gender equality, enhanced training facilities, and targeted programs designed for female athletes. By creating a safe and supportive environment, the MTF is ensuring that more women have the opportunity to thrive in the sport. Bucktowutsing’s enduring tenure and unwavering dedication exemplify the transformative power of women in shaping the landscape of Mauritian sports.
