Emtel WeCare – The Telecom Leader Reaffirms Its Commitment to the Rodriguan Community

This year, Emtel celebrates 36 years of existence and innovation in Mauritius, and 19 years of presence in Rodrigues. As part of the company’s reinforced social and environmental commitment announced during this anniversary, the ICT giant participated in several initiatives and meetings on the island. The visit was guided by the Emtel WeCare philosophy, which embodies the company’s commitment to fostering a more sustainable, equitable, and inclusive society in both Mauritius and Rodrigues.

Kresh Goomany, CEO of Emtel, carried out several visits during his stay. He first went to the GPL Special Learning Centre in Camp du Roi, a school dedicated to the education of children with special needs. The day began with a symbolic planting of endemic trees within the school grounds, followed by a beach clean-up between Anse Ali and Pointe Coton.

A meeting was also organised with several Rodrigan NGOs supported by Emtel, including the Voluntary Blood Donors AssociationShoals Rodrigues, the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, the GPL Special Learning Centre, the Rodrigues Paralympic Team, the Breast Cancer Centre, and the Rotary Club of Rodrigues. It was an opportunity for Emtel to reaffirm its support for these valued organisations.

“At Emtel, we firmly believe that every action counts. What drives us is seeing the positive impact that simple but sincere initiatives can have. Whether it’s offering children enriched education, supporting women toward empowerment, or preserving Rodrigues’ beaches — these are the commitments that give real meaning to our presence on the island. By supporting local initiatives, we help build a more inclusive, resilient, and environmentally respectful society. It’s a long-term approach designed to create value beyond connectivity,” said Kresh Goomany at the end of the day.

These actions once again demonstrate Emtel’s strong commitment to environmental and societal causes, particularly those benefitting women and children. To recap, the company’s socio-environmental efforts are structured around three key pillars:

  • Environmental preservation through climate change mitigation, waste management, and protection of ecosystems and natural resources
  • Social inclusion by addressing poverty and improving access to education and healthcare
  • Economic development through community empowerment, job creation, and long-term support of local initiatives
