The University of Technology Mauritius (UTM) Staff Club has long been committed to creating positive change, both within the university community and in society at large. As a non-profit organization, its primary objective is to bring together UTM staff while contributing to the betterment of Mauritian society as a whole.
The Club is led by its President, Loovesh Ramwodin, who is also a Lecturer at UTM, with the support of over 130 dedicated staff members and 10 executive members: Doorgesh Sookarah, Chitra Ghoorah Cheetoo, Varsha Pumchurn, Ashwini Moheeputh-Sohane, Ashish Bhowalee, Lovena G-Coolen, Subash Hoollah, Rani Ramdany, and Ritesh Aungnoo.

Over the past year, the UTM Staff Club has been at the forefront of numerous initiatives aimed at supporting the less fortunate, encouraging unity, and promoting social well-being. These efforts have covered various sectors, ranging from elderly care to child welfare and have also included support for those affected by natural disasters.
One of the flagship initiatives was a day of donation and volunteering at the Ashram SEWA in Belle-Vue. Club members spent an entire day with the elderly residents, distributing meals and participating in activities to brighten their daily lives. This event was a true testament to the power of solidarity, with residents expressing their heartfelt gratitude.
Furthermore, the Staff Club extended its support to the Foyer Trochetia in Pointe-aux-Sables, a facility that cares for elderly individuals with reduced mobility. Essential items such as bed linens, medical mattresses, and other necessary equipment were donated to improve their comfort and quality of life. “This action reflects our ongoing commitment to caring for the most vulnerable in our society. We firmly believe that even simple gestures can have a significant impact on their lives. It also embodies the philosophy of the Staff Club: to act with compassion and responsibility to build a more supportive community,” stated Doorgesh Sookarah, Secretary of the Club and Lecturer at UTM.

During the festive season, the Club also supported the children of the Crèche Cœur Immaculé de Marie. Through a fundraising campaign, gifts were distributed, bringing smiles and joy to these children. Club members spent time playing and interacting with them, reinforcing their commitment to the next generation of Mauritians.
When Cyclone Belal struck, many families in the Canal Dayot region were severely affected. In response, the Staff Club mobilized to provide food supplies to those impacted. This initiative was made possible thanks to the generosity of its members.
Looking ahead to 2025, the UTM Staff Club is committed to continuing its legacy of social impact. Among its upcoming initiatives is the distribution of educational materials to secondary schools around the university campus. This project, has already been initiated with the Bhujoharry Colleges of La Tour Koenig and Quartier Militaire. The aim was to equip students with the necessary tools to enhance their learning experience. Additionally, the Club plans to launch a coaching program that will provide mentorship to secondary school students, guiding them through their academic journey with personalized advice and support.

“As President of the Club, it has always been a priority for me to encourage giving back to society. We have a responsibility to help those around us, and I am proud of the work our members have accomplished to make a tangible impact on people’s lives,” concluded Loovesh Ramwodin.
The UTM Staff Club will continue prioritizing social initiatives and aims to make 2025 an even more impactful year.
