The shared vision for further collaboration between the Republic of Mauritius and the United Kingdom (UK) of Great Britain and Northern Ireland was the focus of the courtesy call paid by the newly appointed British High Commissioner to Mauritius, His Excellency Mr Paul Brummell, on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade, Mr Dhananjay Ramful, in Port Louis, on Tuesday, July 21.
The British High Commissioner also presented his credentials to the Head of State, His Excellency Dharam Gokhool, at the State House.
In a statement, Minister Ramful expressed pleasure in meeting with the new British High Commissioner. He underlined that discussions pertained to the Chagos Archipelagos, as the Agreement concerning the Chagos Archipelago, including the Diego Garcia treaty, was presented to the UK Parliament in May 2025.

The Minister further recalled the establishment of the Strategic Partnership Framework between Mauritius and the UK that paves the way for stronger cooperation with a particular focus on boosting mutual economic growth and trade, strengthening the international rules-based system, reinforcing maritime security, and tackling climate change.
According to Minister Ramful, the meeting also provided an opportunity to address other topics of mutual interest, such as education.
The British High Commissioner, His Excellency Mr Brummell, was quoted, “Our two nations have been close partners for many decades – a partnership founded on shared values as Commonwealth democracies. From building climate resilience and tackling illicit finance to advancing trade and investment, our cooperation has grown steadily over the years. With the historic agreement on sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago and the UK-Mauritius Strategic Partnership Framework, we have entered a new era of collaboration that will unlock greater opportunities for prosperity and security for both our countries.”
On his LinkedIn post, the British envoy to Mauritius, Ambassador Brummell, mentioned the meeting with Minister Ramful, “For a newly arrived Ambassador or High Commissioner, the first meeting with the host Minister of Foreign Affairs is always an important occasion. I am most grateful to the Hon Dhananjay Ramful, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade of Mauritius, for such a warm meeting immediately following my presentation of credentials.”
The UK in Mauritius, in its Facebook post, mentions that the High Commissioner brings with him 37 years of diplomatic experience spanning postings across the globe where the top priority remains the Strategic Partnership Framework (SPF), which will help the growth of both economies, keeping seas safe, strengthening good governance, and fighting climate change.
Furthermore, a press release distributed by the British High Commission mentions that over the coming days, Mr Brummell will have introductory meetings with Dr the Honourable Navinchandra Ramgoolam, GCSK, FRCP, Prime Minister; the Honourable Paul Bérenger, GCSK, Deputy Prime Minister; the Honourable Dhananjay Ramful, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade; and Honourable Cabinet Members and senior officials, to discuss how our countries can continue to work closely together to achieve our shared goals.
