Middlesex University Mauritius celebrates Global Talent and Impact at its 2025 Graduation Ceremony

Middlesex University Mauritius celebrated a significant milestone on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, as it hosted its 2025 Graduation Ceremony at the Trianon Convention Centre. The event brought together more than 2,000 guests, including graduates and their families, members of the university leadership and staff, industry partners, alumni, and distinguished guests, to honour the achievements of more than 500 students graduating from undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Now in its 15th year of operations, the Mauritius campus continues to be a beacon of accessible British tertiary education in the region. The ceremony was officially opened by Professor Mari Jansen Van Rensburg, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Director, who welcomed distinguished guests, including Professor Shân Wareing, Vice Chancellor, Middlesex University, Mr Goran Mandic, Deputy British High Commissioner to Mauritius, as well as members of the university community and industry partners.

“This is your day,” said Professor Mari Jansen Van Rensburg in her opening address to the Class of 2025. “Your group has been truly exceptional. Among you are some of the strongest leaders I have seen in my 25 years in higher education, alongside world-class athletes, innovators, and changemakers. Your talent, creativity, optimism, and energy give us all great hope for the future.”

The event celebrated not only academic accomplishments but also the transformative impact students have had on their communities. For instance, Computer Science students claimed top honours in the Digicup and Hactive8 Cybersecurity competitions, while psychology students presented their research work at international conferences in Berlin and Dublin. Law students played an active role in democratic initiatives, including participation in the Regional Youth Parliament and Youth COP 2024. They also engaged with leaders, such as the President of Mauritius and UN representatives, on global policy issues.

Business students secured top placements in national case competitions, pitched start-up ideas, and partnered with industry leaders through challenges hosted on campus. Moreover, students and staff supported a range of social initiatives, from refurbishing ICT labs to leading coding workshops for schoolchildren. The campus also raised awareness and funds for local NGOs through events such as the 24-hour cyclothon for Befrienders. Regarding academic accomplishments, faculty colleagues were celebrated for over 50 research outputs this year. Special mention was made of newly doctoral graduates and recipients of teaching excellence credentials.

Reflecting on her first year as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shân Wareing spoke of the inspiration she has drawn from the Middlesex community, recognising the Class of 2025 as part of a legacy of transformation and resilience: “Today, you are joining a network of 295,000 Middlesex alumni around the world. From now on, you will always be part of our global university community. I hope you will share my pride in this exceptional community to which you belong now and for the rest of your life.”

The graduation ceremony also paid tribute to the university’s vibrant student life, which continue to drive meaningful dialogue, industry engagement, and student wellbeing. Events such as the TEDx Middlesex University Mauritius and the MDX Entrepreneurship Fair showcased student voices, ideas, and cultural diversity.

Professor Jansen Van Rensburg closed her address by acknowledging the collective effort behind every success: “Success is never your own. Take a moment to thank those who supported you: your families, lecturers, peers. This ceremony is a rite of passage and a celebration of community.”

Among the many standout moments of the day, the university honoured three students graduating at just 18 years of age, as well as two sets of siblings graduating together, a testament to the confidence families place in the institution.

Delivering the keynote address as guest of honour, Mr Goran Mandic, Deputy British High Commissioner to Mauritius emphasised the close ties between Mauritius and the United Kingdom, highlighting the importance of educational partnerships in establishing the island as a genuine regional education hub. He reiterated the shared commitment of both countries to broaden access to high-quality British education, which offers opportunities and transformative potential for younger generations to address major global challenges such as artificial intelligence and climate change.

As the Class of 2025 steps into the next chapter, Middlesex University Mauritius remains committed to nurturing future-ready graduates, who are not only academically accomplished but also socially responsible and globally minded. With students from over 40 countries and international students making up more than 45% of the student body, the university offers programmes aligned to emerging global industries and places strong emphasis on employability, inclusivity, and innovation.

As a leading institution in Mauritius, we offer high-quality British education that is both accessible and affordable. Staying true to our institutional roots, we foster a community built on collaboration and mutual support, where students and academics – many of whom are trained at top universities – can forge strong and meaningful connections.

Our students follow the same academic programmes as those offered at our London and Dubai campuses, graduating with an internationally recognised British degree. Our International Foundation Programme (IFP) provides an excellent pathway for students to smoothly transition into undergraduate studies, equipping them with the essential academic skills needed for success. Our undergraduate programmes, completed in just three years, lead to a British degree that opens doors to numerous opportunities – whether entering the global job market or pursuing postgraduate studies.

Our postgraduate courses, designed with flexibility in mind, combine evening classes and hybrid learning to accommodate working professionals looking to advance their careers and enhance their skills.

We are committed to delivering a personalised and high-quality learning experience to every student. Our dedication to excellence is reflected in the achievements of our graduates. In 2024, for instance, 74% of our graduates achieved a “First-Class” or “Upper Second-Class” degree. A British qualification further enhances their mobility and prospects on an international scale.

Our strong ties with the industry, across sectors such as banking, information technology, law, business, and media, provide our students with valuable real-world experience through internships, part-time roles, and employment opportunities after graduation. Employability skills are embedded within our curriculum, making our graduates highly sought after by employers. In fact, over 95% of our graduates secure full-time employment or continue their studies within six months of graduation.

Beyond academic and professional success, we place great importance on student wellbeing. Our dedicated student services team offers a wide range of activities throughout the year, while extracurricular opportunities, including student societies, leadership programmes, international competitions, business incubators, and TEDx events, help students develop transferable skills and achieve personal growth.

Our modern campus offers secure accommodation, state-of-the-art classrooms, specialist facilities, and leisure spaces, creating an inclusive environment where meaningful connections thrive. Hosting students from over 40 nationalities, Middlesex University Mauritius ensures a smooth transition into a vibrant multicultural community. Next month, we will inaugurate the extension of our campus: a new facility of approximately 1,600 square metres, designed to support the evolution of our academic offering. This state-of-the-art building will host new programmes such as a degree in Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering, a BSc in Artificial Intelligence with Data Science, our MBA programme, as well as several innovative master’s degrees in Computer Science and Engineering. Our Law students will also soon benefit from a dedicated moot court, providing them with valuable practical experience and strengthening their training. In addition, we provide comprehensive support to our international students, from visa assistance to arrival planning, ensuring they feel welcomed, supported, and fully prepared for success.
