Middlesex University Mauritius welcomes Japanese Robotics Delegation, offering students unique learning and career opportunities

Middlesex University Mauritius welcomed a delegation from DaraJapan and Wing Robotics, leading Japanese innovators in the field of robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI). During their visit to the university’s campus on 26 November 2025, the partners reaffirmed their commitment under a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), providing three robots, including ARM Robotics units. This equipment was used for training, demonstrations and knowledge-exchange activities. This collaboration forms part of a broader effort to position Middlesex University Mauritius at the forefront of robotics and engineering education in Mauritius, and to support national and regional discussions around emerging technologies.

This programme aligns with Middlesex University Mauritius’ ambition to introduce a teaching model centred on robotics and AI. Its aim is to create a sustainable ecosystem of human capital in which learners become educators and innovators, while fostering connections between local and international students, universities, companies and Japanese engineers.

Strengthening its cooperation with Mauritius, Japan is offering young Mauritians unique opportunities in IT, AI and technology through training, skills development and immersive experiences. DaraJapan has launched an innovative programme lasting three to six months, combining video courses, mentoring and practical projects, culminating in certification.

As part of this initiative, the university hosted a high-level academic session featuring experiential workshops, expert presentations and panel discussions. Under the theme “Takumi Robotics (Japan-Mauritius): Crafting the Future with AI & Robotics”, the session brought together Japanese specialists, Middlesex academics and students. On 27 November, hands-on technical training continued under the IMANI Bootcamp, including workshops and demonstrations designed to upskill students and academic staff. Held in the Robotics Lab, these sessions marked the first public demonstration of Japanese robots within a private academic institution in Mauritius.

The IMANI Bootcamp emphasised the Takumi spirit, representing Japan’s ethos of craftsmanship, precision, dedication and mastery. Through these immersive sessions, participants engaged with both the technology and mindset behind Japanese engineering, laying the groundwork for a regional hub in robotics and AI.

“By driving this national initiative, our ambition is to strengthen our leadership in robotics, engineering and technology-based learning. Through workshops and training sessions, our staff and students have benefited from a unique opportunity to directly engage with Japanese engineers and learn about robot operation, programming and calibration. These sessions will enable our students to gain deeper insights into industry-ready robotics engineering, its real-life applications and new avenues for talent sourcing in the Japanese market,” said Prof. Mari Jansen Van Rensburg, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Campus Director of Middlesex University Mauritius.

“This milestone reinforces our standing as a regional leader in advanced technology education and further consolidates our role as a platform for innovation, research and international cooperation. It complements our BEng and AI & Data Science programmes, ensuring that our students remain ahead of the curve in rapidly evolving fields. This momentum also aligns with our ongoing recruitment campaign, as the new students joining us in January will likewise benefit from this strengthened academic environment. We are proud to partner with leading global tech organisations to create job opportunities, facilitate experiential workshops and share valuable resources across Asia, Africa and beyond. By integrating practical robotics into mainstream higher education, this collaboration exposes our students to cutting-edge technology and opens new pathways for future careers. It is equally essential to communicate these advancements to our students, parents and partners to clearly reflect the transformation being driven within the university,” she added.

These activities strengthen MDX Mauritius’ practice-based learning model, offering real-world experience and equipping students with skills for emerging careers in robotics, automation and AI. The integration of robots represents a significant milestone in a long-term partnership, positioning Middlesex as a key player in shaping the technological transformation of higher education in Mauritius.

Bilateral exchanges between Middlesex academics and Japanese engineers have been productive, helping to map out future collaboration opportunities. During their visit to Mauritius, the Japanese delegation also conducted a two-day training programme for local educators at the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE), complemented by technical workshops at the MDX campus. On 28 November, Middlesex University represented the academic sector at the official closing ceremony held at the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), alongside Japanese representatives and Mauritian officials.

This initiative stands as a testament to MDX Mauritius’ commitment to investing in practical, future-oriented learning in line with international standards.

About Middlesex University Mauritius

Middlesex University Mauritius, the local campus of the prestigious Middlesex University London, is set in an exceptional environment. As a leading institution in Mauritius, it offers high-quality British education that is both accessible and affordable. Staying true to its institutional roots, it fosters a community built on collaboration and mutual support, where students and academics—many of whom are trained at top universities—can forge strong and meaningful connections.

Students follow the same academic programmes offered at the London and Dubai campuses, graduating with an internationally recognised British degree. The International Foundation Programme (IFP) provides an excellent pathway for students transitioning into undergraduate studies, offering essential academic skills for success. Undergraduate programmes, completed in just three years, provide a British qualification that opens global opportunities—whether entering the job market or pursuing postgraduate studies. Students can pursue degrees in Law, Business, Accounting, Data Analytics, IT, Cyber Security, Psychology and the Creative Industries. New programmes such as the BEng Mechatronics and Robotics Engineering and the BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Data Science prepare students for emerging industries.

Postgraduate courses combine evening classes and hybrid learning to support working professionals. These programmes cover areas such as LLM, Data Science, Cyber Security and Emerging Threats. A key highlight is the MBA programme, which follows a carousel model enabling multiple entry points throughout the year and greater flexibility for learners.

Middlesex Mauritius is committed to delivering a personalised, high-quality learning experience, reflected in the achievements of its graduates. In 2024, 74% of graduates achieved a First-Class or Upper Second-Class degree. A British qualification further enhances global mobility and employability.

Strong industry ties across banking, IT, law, business and media offer students internships, part-time roles and employment opportunities after graduation. Employability skills are embedded in the curriculum, resulting in over 95% of graduates securing full-time employment or pursuing further studies within six months.

Student wellbeing is a central pillar, supported by a dedicated services team offering year-round activities. Extracurricular opportunities—including societies, leadership programmes, international competitions, business incubators and TEDx events—encourage personal growth and the development of transferable skills.

The modern campus provides secure accommodation, state-of-the-art classrooms, specialist facilities such as a moot court, and leisure spaces, creating an inclusive environment where connections flourish. Hosting students from over 40 nationalities, Middlesex University Mauritius ensures a smooth transition into a vibrant, multicultural academic community.
