Republic of Poland opens Honorary Consulate in Mauritius, Jacques M. d’Unienville appointed as Honorary Consul

The Republic of Poland has announced the official opening of its Honorary Consulate in Mauritius, marking an important milestone in strengthening diplomatic ties between Poland and Mauritius.

The event, held on December 9, 2025, at the Holiday Inn Mauritius Mon Trésor, was attended by a distinguished group of guests, including the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland, H.E. Mr. Mirosław Gojdź, and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration, and International Trade of Mauritius, Hon. Dhananjay Ramful.

In his speech, Ambassador Gojdź expressed his excitement about the deepening relationship between Poland and Mauritius, underscoring the importance of this new consulate in fostering greater cooperation in trade, culture, and tourism. “I strongly believe that the opening of the Polish Consulate will prove a key milestone of the developing relationship between Poland and Mauritius. The Consulate will have the responsibility to support the Polish community and Polish citizens visiting Mauritius. However, it should also become the centre where we should discuss how we will be able to pursue a brighter future for both our countries,” he highlighted.

For his part, the Honourable Minister Dhananjay Ramful noted: “This event is not just a formal act of diplomacy – it is a testament to the growing bond between our two countries and a signal of our shared commitment to a brighter future together. The government envisions giving substance and value to our relations with our European friends through concrete partnerships taking into consideration five centuries of our shared history. It is worth noting that the first EU-Mauritius Partnership Dialogue, the first one under the Samoa Agreement, held this year on the 10th of April 2025 in Mauritius, concluded with a shared commitment to enhance the cooperation between the EU and Mauritius.

A key highlight of the evening was the appointment of Jacques M. d’Unienville, CEO of Omnicane, as the Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Mauritius. Mr. d’Unienville’s extensive business experience and long-standing involvement in the economic landscape of Mauritius are seen as a tremendous asset in promoting Poland’s interests in the region.

As Honorary Consul, I will devote myself to three simple but ambitious goals. To strengthen the friendship and cooperation between our two nations, to offer assistance and protection to Polish citizens who live in or visit Mauritius, and to act as a bridge so that the Polish community here always feels at home and proud of its roots. I am fully aware that this mission would be impossible without the support of the Mauritian authorities, the Polish diaspora, and all of you present here tonight. I therefore ask for your trust, your advice, and your friendship. In the words of St. John Paul II, the son of Poland, whose message still resonates across the oceans, freedom is not given once and for all. It must be conquered anew every day through solidarity and love.” said Jacques M. d’Unienville.

The evening’s reception was a wonderful occasion to celebrate this new chapter in diplomatic relations, as well as to reflect on the shared history and values that unite Poland and Mauritius.

The event concluded with warm congratulations for all parties involved, and a renewed commitment to continued collaboration between Poland and Mauritius.
