Int’l Foundation Programme: Middlesex University Mauritius supports the next generation of students

Taking the first steps into higher education can be a decisive moment in a student’s academic journey. With this in mind, Middlesex University Mauritius opened the doors of its Flic-en-Flac campus on Thursday,, 19 February 2026, for an induction day dedicated to its International Foundation Programme (IFP).

The event brought together new students and academic teams to prepare participants for their specialised undergraduate paths. The initiative aims to ease their transition into this next stage of study by providing structured support, practical workshops, and hands-on experience within the university environment, helping students, who often come from different educational systems, to adapt fully to academic life.

Upon arrival, students took part in a comprehensive induction programme which included meetings with academic staff, IT orientation sessions, academic guidance and presentations on key programmes.

The event began with a welcome address from the Academic Director at Middlesex University Mauritius, Dr Phil Barter, who shared practical advice to help students start their university journey confidently, followed by a series of interactive workshops designed to develop autonomy, organisation and self-confidence.

Designed as a true stepping stone to an undergraduate degree, the IFP stands out for its progressive educational approach. It allows students to immerse themselves in university life, develop essential academic skills and familiarise themselves with their chosen field of study through five modules, combining core subjects and specialisations including Computer Science, Psychology, Accounting and Finance, Business Management, Law, marketing and creative fields.

Beyond classroom learning, the university places a strong emphasis on experiential learning throughout the academic journey. As part of the programme, students will have the opportunity to take part in immersive initiatives such as pitch simulations in front of professionals and moot court sessions, where they argue legal cases. These practical exercises help them further develop their skills in reasoning, critical thinking, and public speaking.

“The IFP is far more than a preparatory year; it offers a stimulating and supportive environment in which each student can strengthen their skills, resilience, and confidence. Our mission is to empower them to thrive at university and to succeed in their future academic and professional pursuits. The programme is open to students holding School Certificates and Higher School Certificates who wish to build a strong academic foundation and prepare themselves effectively for undergraduate studies,” says Head of School (Foundation Education) and founder of the Centre for Mathematics and Statistics Teaching & Learning Ashley Hoolash.

Through its International Foundation Programme, Middlesex University Mauritius reinforces its commitment to providing a structured, inclusive, and innovative environment that supports students at every stage of their journey, from enrolment to academic success. With admissions campaigns underway for the February, April and September 2026 intakes, the university aims to make the IFP a preferred gateway to high-quality international higher education, while also noting that applications for the February IFP intake are still open, with a limited number of places available.
