New Swiss Ambassador presents Credentials Letter, discusses collaboration avenues

The Ambassador-Designate of the Swiss Confederation to Mauritius, His Excellency Stefano Toscano, has presented his Letter of Credence to the Head of State, His Excellency Dharambeer Gokhool, on February 18, at the State House, Réduit. H.E. Toscano officially takes over as Switzerland’s envoy to Mauritius, looking set to stymie the diplomatic relations between both countries.

Ambassador Toscano was accompanied by his spouse, Dija Toscano; the First Secretary and Deputy Head of Mission, Urs Fluckiger; and the Officer in charge of Political, Economic, Social, and Environmental Analysis, Haniella Razafindrabe.

The event saw an opportunity to revisit what is described as longstanding and cordial diplomatic relations between Mauritius and the Swiss Confederation, formally established in 1968. During the event, both sides reviewed current Memoranda of Understanding and ongoing collaboration in key areas such as health, tourism promotion, foreign direct investment, and engagement with the Swiss diaspora of approximately 850 individuals residing in Mauritius.

Discussions also centred on the potential academic cooperation, in particular between theSwiss universities and the University of Mauritius, where both sides explored avenues to further boost and consolidate the scope for bilateral ties.

 Opportunities to deepen future cooperation across key areas such as blue economy, pharmaceuticals, artificial intelligence, and digital transformation, with particular emphasis on FinTech, blockchain, and cybersecurity, were also on the agenda.

Ambassador H.E. Toscano has lauded the positive momentum garnered in relations between the two countries, highlighting the importance of communicating the outcomes of these exchanges to his capital.

He also expressed confidence that sustained dialogue would continue to foster stronger bilateral ties and open new avenues for mutually beneficial collaboration across sectors.

On February 20, His Excellency Toscano paid a courtesy visit to the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) where he met the Secretary General, Dr. Drishtysingh Ramdenee.

During the meeting, both sides discussed on the potential for collaborative avenues between Mauritius and Switzerland in terms of economic bilateral trade while at the same time, bolstering private sector engagement.

The exchanges hinged on new prospects for investment and education, together with the harnessing of partnerships, conducive to fostering sustainable economic growth.
