Autisme Maurice Marks World Autism Awareness Day with Community Walk in Curepipe

Autisme Maurice, a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting individual on the autism spectrum and their families in Mauritius, will organise an Autism Awareness Walk on Thursday 2 April 2026 in Curepipe to mark World Autism Awareness Day. The initiative aims to promote greater understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of people living with autism within Mauritian society.

Founded by parents and professionals committed to improving the lives of individual on the autism spectrum, Autisme Maurice works to ensure that children and young adults on the autism spectrum receive appropriate support, education, and opportunities to develop their full potential. The organisation advocates for better recognition of autism as a specific disability and works closely with families, educators, and institutions to promote inclusive practices and services across the country.

A central part of the organisation’s work is its specialised school, which provides tailored educational and developmental support to autistic children and young adults. The school offers a structured and supportive learning environment adapted to the individual needs of each student. Through specialised teaching approaches, therapeutic activities, life-skills training, and social development programmes, the team works to help students build independence, communication abilities, and confidence.

The school’s dedicated staff collaborate closely with families to ensure continuity of support between school and home. Activities focus not only on academic learning but also on daily living skills, social interaction, emotional regulation, and vocational preparation for young adults.

Over the years, Autisme Maurice has become an important voice in advocating for autism awareness in Mauritius, while also building partnerships with local and international organisations to strengthen services for individual on the autism spectrum and their families.

The Autism Awareness Walk on 2 April 2026 will bring together autistic children, families, educators, supporters, and members of the public in a symbolic walk through Curepipe. Participants will gather in the morning before proceeding through the town and concluding the event with an awareness and sensitisation session at the Curepipe Municipality.

The event aims to highlight the message that individual on the autism spectrum are valued members of society who deserve understanding, respect, and equal opportunities.

Laura Augustin, President of Autisme Maurice, stated:

“Autism awareness is not only about understanding a condition; it is about recognising the potential and dignity of every autistic individual. Through this walk, we hope to bring the community together to promote acceptance, inclusion, and a better future for people living with autism and their families in Mauritius.”

The public is warmly invited to join the walk and show their support for autism awareness and inclusion.
