Middlesex University Mauritius celebrates the success of more than 500 graduates ready to shape the future of work

Middlesex University Mauritius celebrated the academic achievements of its Class of 2026 on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, during its annual Graduation Ceremony held at the Trianon Convention Centre. The event brought together graduates, their families, university leadership and staff, industry partners, alumni and distinguished guests to honour the achievements of more than 500 students who successfully completed their undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Reflecting the University’s international character, the graduating class comprised 433 undergraduate and 73 postgraduate students representing 22 nationalities. For the first time, the Graduation Ceremony was held across two separate sessions to accommodate the University’s growing student community, with the School of Business and Law graduating in the morning, followed by the School of Digital Technologies in the afternoon.

The 2026 ceremony also marks a significant milestone in the University’s development, as the Mauritius campus surpasses 2,000 enrolled students for the first time. This sustained growth reflects the confidence placed in Middlesex University Mauritius by students, families and industry partners, reinforcing its position as a leading provider of British higher education in the region for more than fifteen years.

The ceremony was officially opened by Professor Mari Jansen Van Rensburg, Provost and Campus Director, who welcomed a senior delegation from the University’s Hendon campus in London, led by Professor Shân Wareing, Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University. The delegation also included Mr James Smith, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Information Officer, Professor Klaus Dodds, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology, and Mr Byron Hoo, Chief Financial Officer. They were joined by Heba Capdevila Jangeerkhan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Medine Group, alongside strategic partners of the University.

Both graduation ceremonies featured prominent leaders from Mauritius’ business community as Guests of Honour. The morning ceremony for the School of Business and Law welcomed Ms Priscilla Backory, Legal Executive at Mauritius Commercial Bank (MCB), while the afternoon ceremony for the School of Digital Technologies featured Mr Vidia Mooneegan, Global Head of Shared Services at Dayforce, who addressed the graduating technology students.

Professor Mari Jansen Van Rensburg

“This day celebrates the commitment and resilience of an exceptional graduating class,” said Professor Mari Jansen Van Rensburg during her opening address. “Among you are bright minds, technological innovators and future changemakers who will develop practical solutions to the challenges facing today’s industries. Your talent, optimism and energy give us tremendous hope because you now carry the future of our region’s and our world’s economy.”

This ambition is reflected in the University’s graduate outcomes. With employability embedded at the heart of its educational model and programmes closely aligned with industry needs, 99% of Middlesex University Mauritius graduates either secure employment or progress to further study within six months of graduation.

The University’s close collaboration with industry provides students with opportunities to apply academic knowledge to real-world challenges. This year, students achieved several notable successes, including first place in the Huawei National Innovation Competition and recognition for the collaborative platform Study Hive under the NPCC AI Startups Project.

Students also represented Mauritian youth at the inaugural Regional Youth Parliament of the Indian Ocean organised by the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), while the University was recognised with the Best Speaker Award at the Youth Empowerment Summit.

Beyond academic achievement, students actively contributed to a wide range of social, entrepreneurial and environmental initiatives. Through community engagement, volunteer projects and sustainability-focused activities, Middlesex University Mauritius continues to fulfil its mission of developing graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also socially responsible global citizens.

The Class of 2026 also distinguished itself through several outstanding individual achievements. Four international students under the age of 20 graduated with First-Class Honours, while another outstanding graduate secured employment with a leading private sector organisation prior to graduation. The University’s commitment to widening participation was further demonstrated through the success of recipients of the Chagos Bursary Scheme, who also graduated with First-Class Honours. This culture of excellence extends to the University’s academic community, with several members of staff completing doctoral degrees (PhDs) or earning a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education during the year.

“Becoming a Middlesex University graduate is a remarkable personal achievement because graduates like you transform lives within your communities and across the world,” said Professor Shân Wareing, Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University. She reminded graduates that by joining the University’s campuses in London, Mauritius and Dubai, they become part of a global alumni network of more than 300,000 graduates, carrying forward a lifelong legacy of excellence.

Through its Class of 2026, Middlesex University Mauritius reaffirms its commitment to developing globally minded graduates equipped to thrive in an international environment, drive innovation, respond to economic and technological change, and contribute meaningfully to the sustainable development of Mauritius and the wider region.

Spotlight on the School of Business and Law

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB Honours) programme at Middlesex University Mauritius has established itself as a leading choice for aspiring legal professionals. Its key strength lies in its rigorous compliance with the requirements of the Mauritius Bar Association, as well as those of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB) in the United Kingdom. This internationally recognised academic and professional framework provides graduates with a direct pathway to the regulated professional training required to qualify as barristers, attorneys and notaries.

Alongside its recognised strength in legal education, Middlesex University Mauritius also offers industry-focused programmes in Business, Accounting and Finance that are designed to meet the evolving needs of the global economy. Through a practice-oriented curriculum, strong links with industry and an emphasis on professional and analytical skills, these programmes prepare graduates for successful careers in areas such as accounting, auditing, financial management, banking, consultancy, entrepreneurship and corporate leadership. By combining academic excellence with real-world application, the University equips students with the knowledge and adaptability required to thrive in an increasingly competitive international business environment.

To support this culture of excellence, the University continues to modernise its learning environment through ongoing investment in its facilities, including the inauguration of the Cat Hill Building. This new facility features innovative collaborative learning spaces as well as a dedicated Moot Court, providing students with an immersive experience that closely reflects real courtroom practice.

Beyond traditional legal careers, the programme equips students with a strong ethical foundation and highly developed analytical skills, further enhanced by significant investment in digital transformation and the responsible use of artificial intelligence. Likewise, students across Business and Accounting disciplines benefit from technology-enhanced learning, exposure to emerging digital tools and industry-relevant projects that strengthen their employability. These advanced competencies make graduates particularly attractive to employers across strategic sectors including compliance, corporate advisory, international taxation, financial services, the public sector, risk management and corporate finance.

Spotlight on the School of Digital Technologies

The School of Digital Technologies serves as a hub for innovation, preparing graduates to tackle some of today’s most significant technological challenges, including artificial intelligence, cyber security, the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics.

This commitment to industry-relevant education is further reinforced by the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the LEAL Group, which will provide students with structured internship opportunities, applied research projects and direct exposure to real-world industrial challenges.

The School’s innovative culture was recently showcased during the third edition of the Digital Technologies Showcase, where around fifty final-year projects were presented to senior business leaders and industry partners. The event highlighted commercially viable solutions, including an AI-powered real-time posture correction system and an automated vehicle damage assessment platform.

By combining cutting-edge technologies with practical industry experience, the School equips graduates with the technical expertise, creativity and leadership skills required to drive digital transformation across businesses and industries.
