Dukesbridge celebrates 10 years in Mauritius with the grand inauguration of its new Secondary School in Trianon

Dukesbridge, the largest group of private international schools in Mauritius, proudly celebrated a significant milestone with the grand inauguration of Dukesbridge Secondary School, marking the 10th anniversary of Dukesbridge’s presence in Mauritius.

The event was held at the school’s new Trianon campus and was graced by distinguished Chief Guests H.E. Ms. Kate Chamley, Australian High Commissioner to Mauritius; H.E. Mr. Marie Cyril Eddy Boissézon, G.O.S.K., Vice-President of Mauritius; and the Honourable Mr. Kavydass Ramano, Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management, and Climate Change, who participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The inauguration was also attended by other dignitaries including, Arvin Boolell, Anil C. Currimjee, Dooshiant Ramluckhun and Xavier Luc Duval.

The teaching methodologies at Dukesbridge emphasise a unique model that integrates happiness with Western Australian pedagogies. The school is committed not only to academic excellence but also to fostering all-round development, including sports and performing arts. At the event, Dukesbridge showcased its commitment to creativity with a heartwarming performance of its new song, ‘Together / Ansam’ by The Prophecy and students, highlighting the school’s innovative approach to education.

New Secondary School represents key milestone in Australia-Mauritius collaboration

Through its brand-new campus centrally located in Trianon, opposite the Ebene cybercity, Dukesbridge continues to shape the future of education in East Africa with a dedication to innovation. Currently, the school caters to Grades 7 and 8, and is excited to expand to Grade 9 starting in 2025. Dukesbridge Secondary follows a combined curriculum that is based on the Cambridge learning objectives, but also incorporates the Western Australian curriculum. The lessons are designed to be interactive, and students are encouraged to complete group and individual project work that involves presentations and producing ‘hands on’ products. 

At Grade 11, students will sit for IGCSE (equivalent to SC’s and are Cambridge exams) and move onto HSC’s to allow those who wish to do so, to compete for the Laureate awards. As part of the Western Australian system, they will also be able to sit for the WACE exams which replace SC and HSC and is a 3-year course. This would allow them to apply for universities a year earlier than the traditional route which is 4 years. This qualification is recognised internationally, and Dukesbridge is currently compiling a list of International Universities that accept this qualification.

Rishi Nursimulu, the Founder and Chairman of Dukesbridge, expressed his pride in this new chapter:

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Her Excellency Ms. Kate Chamley said: “This is not just a celebration for the school community but a significant milestone for education in Mauritius and the transnational partnerships between Australia and Mauritius. The introduction of the Western Australian curriculum marks an expansion of educational vision and a shared commitment to quality learning. By being affiliated with the Western Australian school curriculum, Dukesbridge ensures that students receive a high-quality, globally recognized education that prepares them for their future studies and life as informed, engaged global citizens. The Australia-Mauritius relationship is one of mutual respect and cooperation. Education is a cornerstone of this relationship, and I am excited about the possibilities that arise from our collaboration to enhance educational experiences in Mauritius. The establishment of this secondary school marks a new chapter in Dukesbridge’s 10-year history. It provides a solid foundation for further educational initiatives, partnerships, and opportunities between our two countries. May this school be a beacon of learning, growth, and opportunity for generations to come. Let us continue to work towards unlocking the future potential of our young people and celebrating education as a transformative force that crosses borders.”

The Honorable Mr. Kavydass Ramano shared his thoughts on the importance of education in building a better future. He said, “Dukesbridge is a prime example of an innovative and integrated approach to education. Education is a powerful tool that can transform lives and societies. It’s about learning skills, acquiring knowledge, and inculcating values for a better world. As Kofi Annan, the former UN Secretary General, said, ‘Education is a premise of progress in every society.’ The school’s commitment to preserving nature and engaging pupils in eco-friendly initiatives is highly commendable. The government is providing space and opportunities for private, non-grant-aided institutions to function in an enabling environment, contributing to the quality and diversity of our education system. We have reiterated our commitment to making education the cornerstone of progress and prosperity. In 2024-2025, the government is investing MUR Rs 21 million in the education system, school infrastructure, and institutions. We are collaborating with the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Youth Empowerment to undertake a series of activities to sensitise and promote environmental culture. We are organising a special awareness-raising program during school holidays and promoting outdoor learning through the concept of ‘learning with nature.”

Dukesbridge marks a decade of exceptional achievements

The inauguration of Dukesbridge Secondary School stands as a testament to Dukesbridge’s dedication to providing inclusive and high-quality education, marking a decade of exceptional educational contributions in Mauritius.

Since its establishment, Dukesbridge has grown to become a leading educational institution with 10 preschool campuses, 3 primary schools, and now a secondary school. The school employs over 230 members and provides a unique educational experience to more than 1,500 students. Dukesbridge is the first and only school in Africa accredited by the Western Australian School Curriculum and Standards Authority (WA SCSA) and has expanded with two campuses in Nairobi, Kenya. The school remains committed to its mission of fostering educational excellence and expanding its impact across the region.

Following the inauguration of Dukesbridge Secondary School, Anil C. Currimjee, Director of Currimjee Jeewanjee and Company Ltd, said: “AI will play a role in the future, human talent remains indispensable. H.E. Mr. Marie Cyril Eddy Boissézon, G.O.S.K, Vice-President of the Republic of Mauritius concluded with his remarks saying, “The key to our development agenda is education. We firmly believe that education is a fundamental human right, and we have a responsibility to ensure and protect this right. Our education system has undergone significant reforms with the vision of nurturing a generation of young people who are self-motivated, creative thinkers with strong communication skills, a deep sense of commitment, and a solid foundation for lifelong learning.
