USA Universities to showcase opportunities at the Annual Study Fair

By Shruti Menon Seeboo

The United States of America, a global leader in higher education, offers a diverse range of academic opportunities for international students. With world-renowned universities, cutting-edge research facilities, and a vibrant cultural landscape, the U.S has long been a top destination for students seeking a quality education.

At this year’s Annual Study Fair, several prestigious American universities will be represented, showcasing their unique programs, campus life, and admission requirements. The fair will be held on November 23 and 24 at the Hennessy Hotel, Ebene. To provide insights into the American higher education system and what it offers Mauritian students, we interviewed Mr. Jonathan Koehler, Public Affairs Officer, U.S. Embassy Mauritius. Excerpts:

1. What does the participation of institutions like Education USA and INTO Global Partnerships at the Campus Abroad Study Fair reflect about the United States’ commitment to promoting education in Mauritius?

There is tremendous value to pursuing higher studies in the United States.  EducationUSA proudly advocates access for Mauritian students at the more than 4,000 accredited colleges and universities in the United States.  The U.S. Embassy’s EducationUSA office can provide the latest information on the programs of study at these universities, as well as the generous financial aid and scholarship packages available for international students

2. How does the U.S. Embassy support Mauritian students in accessing higher education opportunities in the U.S., and what resources are available to guide them through the process?

The U.S. Embassy’s EducationUSA office is staffed by an adviser who has first-hand experience studying in the United States.  Our adviser works throughout the year to provide Mauritian students, parents, teachers, and members of the educational community with accurate and current information on U.S. higher education.  It’s important to note that EducationUSA’s services are free of charge.  Anyone interested in learning more about higher studies in the United States is encouraged to contact us through email at Portlouis_education@state.gov.  Students and parents are most welcome to schedule an appointment with the adviser to learn more.

3. American universities are known for their emphasis on diversity and innovation. How do U.S. institutions plan to engage with Mauritian students to foster academic excellence and global citizenship?

The EducationUSA office works with U.S. universities throughout the year to schedule outreach sessions for their admissions counselors at secondary schools, the U.S. Embassy, and open houses.  Many American universities have visited the country over the last decade, and several universities have been so impressed by the quality of Mauritian students that they come back every year. Recently, EducationUSA has started to develop partnerships between Mauritian and U.S. universities and facilitate collaboration between U.S. higher educational institutions and the Ministry of Education and Ministry of Labor.

4. What are some of the key benefits for Mauritian students choosing to study in the U.S., particularly in relation to academic flexibility, research opportunities, and career advancement?

Students who study in the United States have access to a wealth of resources to conduct research, and the opportunity to apply for job placements that correspond to their academic course of study.  In terms of the study experience, students are provided with guidance and resources to achieve their academic goals.  The undergraduate level, which comprises four years, offers students time during the first two years to explore several areas of study before deciding on a major with the help of an academic adviser.  This flexibility is included in the standard tuition rate.

American universities are well-known for awarding generous scholarships and financial aid to international students.  Institutions across the U.S. work tirelessly to make U.S. education affordable for international students.  Many universities in the U.S. try to remove the maximum financial hardship on students for them to study with a clear mind and be successful.  Overall, the cultural and academic experience on an American college campus provides students an opportunity to develop a skillset that is crucial for their professional development. As part of that, international students are given the chance to gain work experience in the U.S. in their field of study after graduation.

5. In the post-pandemic era, how are U.S. universities adapting their approach to international education to ensure that students from Mauritius continue to have access to world-class programs, both in-person and online?

Prior to the pandemic, American colleges already had hybrid systems in place for delivery of courses.  After the pandemic, institutions have established more advanced platforms to support students.  Many competitive U.S. higher education institutions offer hybrid or online degree programs.  Our EducationUSA office can provide more information about programs that best fit your needs.

6. Looking ahead, how do you envision the future of USA-Mauritius educational ties, and are there any upcoming initiatives or partnerships aimed at strengthening this relationship?

Many Mauritian students are choosing the United States as a destination for higher studies, and we are confident those numbers will continue to grow.  We are proud of the results that we have helped Mauritian students achieve over the past years with our free advising services, and the U.S. Embassy is working to facilitate successful partnerships between U.S. and Mauritian universities.
