The Uniciti International Education Hub (UIEH), the educational division of the Medine Group, continues to position itself as a center of academic excellence in Mauritius and the African region. Today, UIEH officially announced the establishment of the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in Mauritius, marking a new stage in its expansion. This project strengthens Medine’s role in advancing education and reinforces Mauritius’s potential to become a hub for innovation and technology.
The event held at Medine brought together the High Commissioner of India, Her Excellency Ms. Nandini Singla, Dr. Sekar Viswanathan, Vice President of VIT, Dr. Vijay Kumar Chandrasekaran, Professor and Senior Director of Global Operations at VIT, as well as leaders from the Medine Group and UIEH.
VIT selected Mauritius as the location for its first international campus. Founded in 1984 and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) of the Indian government, VIT is known for its leadership in research and innovation and is ranked as the top institution in India in this field. It is also recognized as one of the premier engineering institutions in India. This collaboration with UIEH demonstrates Medine’s ability to attract prestigious institutions offering high-quality degrees, thus strengthening Mauritius’s status as a dynamic and influential academic hub.
Dhiren Ponnusamy, CEO of Medine, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “We are honoured that the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) has chosen Mauritius and Medine to launch its first international campus. This new partnership goes beyond a simple academic collaboration; it represents a shared commitment to create a center of excellence in engineering education in the region. At Medine, we firmly believe that education is a powerful catalyst for societal transformation, and VIT’s arrival is a crucial step towards realizing our vision for the Uniciti International Education Hub.”
From June 2025, VIT (Mauritius) will offer Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degrees in fields such as Civil Engineering and Computer Engineering, with specializations in areas like artificial intelligence and machine learning. All four-year programs will be taught by faculty from VIT India. The Mauritius campus will welcome both local and regional students, fostering an international academic exchange environment.
Dr. Sekar Viswanathan, Vice President of VIT, stated, “We are thrilled to open our first international campus in Mauritius. This partnership reflects our shared commitment to advancing innovation and academic excellence. We believe that Mauritius, with its dynamic environment and strategic position, will enable VIT to expand its global presence and provide transformative education to students worldwide.”
This partnership reinforces UIEH’s initiatives, which have facilitated the establishment of reputable institutions such as the Université Paris Panthéon-Assas, the American Business School of Paris, and ENSA Nantes (Mauritius). Recently, a partnership with Swansea University was formalized, marking a major step for higher education in the health sector in Mauritius.
