The University of Law’s exclusive advocacy session in Mauritius hailed a resounding success

PTC Education, in collaboration with The University of Law, successfully hosted an exclusive Advocacy Session in Mauritius. Led by distinguished Barrister Tariq Al-Mallak, the event provided aspiring barristers with invaluable, hands-on training, further solidifying the commitment to top-tier legal education on the island.

PTC Education was thrilled to announce the resounding success of its exclusive Advocacy Session for aspiring barristers, held in collaboration with The University of Law. This unique opportunity, which took place on Saturday, 5 July 2025, at the vibrant Flying Dodo, Bagatelle, was expertly led by Mr. Tariq Al-Mallak, a distinguished Barrister and the BPC Programme & Student Lead from The University of Law’s London campus. The event drew a significant number of enthusiastic law students, eager to gain a competitive edge in their future legal careers.

The session was meticulously designed to equip future legal professionals with essential courtroom skills that go beyond theoretical knowledge. Mr. Tariq Al-Mallak delivered a dynamic and highly interactive, hands-on session, focusing specifically on the intricacies of examination-in-chief and cross-examination. These are widely recognised as two of the most critical, yet challenging, aspects of a criminal trial. Through practical exercises and live demonstrations, participants gained invaluable insider tips on effective courtroom advocacy, honed their legal reasoning abilities, and significantly boosted their overall confidence in a simulated legal environment. The immersive nature of the training allowed students to actively participate, receiving immediate feedback and understanding the nuances of presenting a case.

Reflecting on the event’s practical approach, Mr. Tariq Al-Mallak commented, “Beyond the core curriculum for which we teach practical skills such as examination-in-chief, cross-examination, drafting, opinion writing, conferencing, civil advocacy, our advocacy training includes practical sessions on bail applications and pleas in mitigation – crucial skills you’ll immediately use in practice, even if not assessed. It’s one thing to watch a courtroom drama on TV or read about it in a book, but it’s a whole different game to actually stand up, think on your feet, ask questions that allow a witness to tell their story, and then to formulate a strategy that cuts down your opponent’s witnesses. This session aimed to give participants a real flavour of what it means to be on the sharp end of the law, and the enthusiasm was palpable.” He further elaborated on the University of Law’s commitment to providing comprehensive training that extends beyond examination requirements, preparing students for the realities of legal practice from day one.

Adding further depth and a local perspective, a practising Barrister and lawyer in Mauritius, Yaadav Damree, an esteemed alumnus of The University of Law, shared his personal journey and professional experiences, offering an inspiring perspective on applying advocacy skills in a real-world legal context. He spoke passionately about the supportive structure at The University of Law, particularly the role of personal tutors. “Tariq was not only my criminal litigation tutor but also my personal tutor at The University of Law. He accompanied me until I finished my Bar course. I’m very grateful for that kind of structure, as it ensures students receive support not just academically, but also in their personal lives.”

Mr. Damree, who completed his LLB at another university in 2019 before joining The University of Law for his intensive Bar course in September of the same year, is now a thriving legal professional in Mauritius. He was officially called to the Bar of the Republic of Mauritius in January 2023 and is currently in private practice, focusing on a broad spectrum of legal areas, including both criminal and civil litigation. His daily work involves everything from attending court proceedings and assisting clients at police stations to diligently representing their legal interests at various institutions across the island. His journey served as a powerful testament to the practical and holistic education provided by The University of Law.

Firdosh Allybokus, Senior Business Development Manager at the Global University Systems, proudly representing The University of Law in Mauritius, expressed immense satisfaction with the event’s outcome. “We were incredibly pleased to bring such a high-calibre expert like Mr. Tariq Al-Mallak to Mauritius. The overwhelming positive feedback from participants, coupled with the valuable contributions from our alumnus Yaadav Damree, underscores our unwavering commitment to providing top-tier educational opportunities and truly preparing our students for successful careers in law. This session is a prime example of how we bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application, ensuring our students are not just knowledgeable, but also highly skilled and confident.”

Following the main advocacy session, dedicated one-to-one counselling sessions were also conducted. These personalised interactions provided students with the invaluable opportunity to discuss their individual career paths, receive tailored advice on further studies, and gain insights into navigating the legal profession. The event was free to attend and open to all law students, with spaces quickly filled due to overwhelming demand, highlighting the strong interest and need for such specialised training in Mauritius.

This highly successful collaboration between PTC Education and The University of Law significantly reinforces their shared dedication to nurturing the next generation of legal talent in Mauritius. By bringing international expertise and real-world insights directly to students, they are actively contributing to the development of a robust and skilled legal community on the island.
