October 9, 2025, Ébène: Emtel Limited (Emtel) announced the appointment of Marcelo Aleman as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective March 2026, following its Board of Directors meeting on October 8. Marcelo Aleman succeeds Kresh Goomany, who will be stepping down from his executive duties due to his retirement. He will, however, retain his position as a director on Emtel’s Board of Directors and assume a consultancy role for the company.
This appointment marks a new chapter for Emtel and is in line with its strategy of positioning itself as a leader in telecommunications and technological innovation, combining service excellence and staying firmly anchored in sustainable growth.
Marcelo Aleman, a seasoned international executive, has built solid experience in the telecommunications, technology, digital, and FinTech sectors. Over the past decades, he has successfully led several complex operations and projects related to global expansion, revenue growth, and innovation, whether in Africa, Latin America, or the Caribbean. He is particularly recognised for his strategic agility, operational excellence, and ability to build high-performing organisations.
“We are delighted to welcome Marcelo as our new CEO at such a crucial time in our journey,” said Bashir A. Currimjee, President of Emtel. “His passion, agility, dedication, and forward-thinking vision are all assets that will enable him to contribute to Emtel’s growth while building on the solid foundations laid by his predecessor,” he added.
Kresh Goomany leaves a lasting legacy, the result of more than a decade of exemplary and unifying leadership, all accompanied by an unwavering dedication to taking Emtel to new heights. Under his leadership, Emtel achieved major milestones in innovation and digital transformation, consolidating its position as one of the technology leaders in Mauritius.
“Kresh’s tenure has been synonymous with bold vision, great resilience, and unwavering commitment to Emtel’s mission. We are grateful for his remarkable contribution and are delighted with his continued commitment to Emtel, both as a consultant and as a director on the Board,” said the Chairman of Emtel.
During his tenure, Emtel undertook a major transition: successfully completing an initial public offering (IPO) on the Mauritius Stock Exchange in May 2024, becoming the first telecommunications company to be listed on the stock exchange, before reaching a new historic milestone by joining the prestigious SEM-10 index, the benchmark stock index on the Mauritian market, in January 2025. Emtel subsequently formalised its accreditation to the SEMSI – the Sustainability Index of the Mauritius Stock Exchange – in May of this year.
Other notable achievements include the launch of OneWeb in Mauritius and Rodrigues (the first satellite earth station in the Indian Ocean), the launch of 5G in Mauritius and Rodrigues, winning two Ookla awards in 2023 and 2024 for the fastest mobile network in Mauritius and East Africa respectively, and, more recently, the launch of its Emtel Cloud solution, offering localised and secure cloud infrastructure solutions to Mauritian businesses, through a strong partnership with the pan-African company NEC XON. This solution aims to provide businesses with reliable solutions that comply with local standards, thus strengthening digital sovereignty and business resilience in Mauritius. Emtel’s management team remains fully committed to ensuring a seamless transition and maintaining its growth momentum, while continuing to deliver innovative and customer-centric solutions, both in Mauritius and beyond.
