Mauritius has officially entered a new era of creative innovation. The country’s first-ever multidisciplinary Generative AI Masterclass for the Creative Industry, hosted by Aestetika Studio, funded by the Mauritius Research and Innovation Council (MRIC), in partnership with the Mauritius Film Development Corporation (MFDC), and supported by Mauritius Telecom Campus, brought together a diverse group of professionals for a groundbreaking day of learning, collaboration, and transformation.
Under the theme “Reshape Your Creative Career with Gen AI,” this first session marked the start of a five-part masterclass series designed to empower local creatives with practical AI knowledge and inspire them to use Generative AI ethically to enhance, not replace, human creativity.
A Historic Step for Mauritius’ Creative Economy
The inaugural cohort, comprising delegates from the Architecture, Mauritian Law, Fashion Design, Television and Film, Design and Animation, Journalism, Photography, Content Creation, Advertising, Education, Marketing, and Entrepreneurial sectors, united with a shared mission: to explore how AI can create new jobs, protect existing ones, and position Mauritius as a regional hub for AI-driven cultural content.
The session provided hands-on experience in prompting, storytelling, and creative ideation using cutting-edge AI tools, demonstrating how innovation and human imagination can co-exist to generate extraordinary results. Participants also examined how to embed ethical AI practices into their professional workflows, ensuring that the rise of AI benefits the many, not the few.
Collaboration for Impact
The partnership between Aestetika Studio, the MRIC, and the MFDC has been pivotal in broadening access and inclusivity. With Mauritius Telecom Campus as the official venue sponsor, over 100 participants can now attend each session, opening the door for students, educators, and industry professionals to co-learn, share insights, and shape a common vision for the future.
This collaboration underscores MFDC’s ongoing commitment to:
• Fostering year-round industry development through continuous training and creative exchange.
• Encouraging ethical AI adoption across creative disciplines.
• Positioning Mauritius as a creative and technological leader in Africa and the Indian Ocean region.
“The MFDC is proud to support initiatives that not only empower creative professionals but also strengthen Mauritius’ reputation as a regional innovation hub,” said Mr Kevin Gutty, Director of the Mauritius Film Development Corporation. “By embracing AI responsibly, we can ensure that technology becomes a tool for inclusion, job creation, and sustainable industry growth.”
From Heritage to Future
In the words of Ingrid Bell, Managing Director of Aestetika Studio:
“This isn’t just about learning AI tools; it’s about redefining what’s possible. Mauritius has always been rich in creativity and culture, and now we’re combining that heritage with innovation to future-proof our creative economy. Our goal is to empower professionals to use AI not as a threat, but as a powerful collaborator.”
The masterclass also celebrated the spirit of community and co-creation, as participants networked across sectors and began brainstorming collaborative projects that will amplify Mauritius’ creative and cultural footprint on the global stage.
What’s Next
Following the success of the first session, the remaining masterclasses will continue to explore the creative potential of Generative AI in diverse fields, from AI-driven storytelling and branding to design innovation, sound creation, cultural reconstruction, international broadcasting standards, content acquisition, and the all-important setting of ethical industry standards.
Participants will also be invited to co-create a real-world AI-powered cultural project, reflecting Mauritius’ unique identity, creativity, and forward-thinking spirit.
