From her initial spark of passion for sales to founding Furniture Elegancy & Interior Design Ltd, Joanna’s entrepreneurial journey is a testament to the power of unwavering support, innovative thinking, and strategic networking. Her dedication to surpassing customer expectations through bespoke and efficient design solutions mirrors her commitment to excellence and sustainability. What inspired you to become an entrepreneur? How would you describe your journey to date?

I was initially drawn to entrepreneurship by my passion for sales, relishing the interaction with customers and the gratification of aiding them in their pursuits. My experience with a distinguished furniture company in Mauritius further ignited my fascination with the industry. Describing my journey as enriching and replete with discoveries, I’ve unearthed my capabilities, empowered to excel in my endeavors. Crucial to this journey has been the unwavering support from my parents, husband, friends, loyal customers, and robust networking platforms, alongside governmental support.

Tell us about your company Furniture Elegancy. What products do you offer?

Established in 2016, Furniture Elegancy & Interior Design Ltd proudly represents the epitome of Mauritian craftsmanship, dedicated to delivering unparalleled excellence in office furniture. Inspired by Seth Godin’s philosophy, we prioritize tailored solutions aimed at surpassing customer expectations. Whether bespoke or standard, our commitment to efficiency, affordability, and innovation remains unwavering. Our production capabilities ensure timely delivery without compromising quality. Embracing sustainability and the circular economy, our locally sourced materials are meticulously crafted to minimize waste and maximize efficiency. From customized installations to interior design consultancy services, our comprehensive suite of solutions aims to elevate workspaces.

How do you see the opportunities and challenges in your sector? Are you interesting in expanding into other countries?

While our sector presents numerous opportunities, burgeoning competition poses a recurring challenge. However, maintaining a clear vision, adhering to best practices, and embracing innovation, including technological advancements and eco-friendly initiatives, are pivotal in distinguishing ourselves. These principles underpin our efforts to penetrate international markets, with ongoing initiatives to establish a presence in African regions. Expansion necessitates meticulous planning, understanding local regulations, and aligning with consumer preferences through strategic partnerships and distribution channels

You were recently part of the Mauritian delegation of women entrepreneurs to the WTO-ITC High Level Event on Women in Trade in Abu Dhabi. What were your key takeaways from this event?

Participation in events like the WTO-ITC High Level Event on Women in Trade in Abu Dhabi has been instrumental in acquiring valuable insights and forging meaningful connections. Key takeaways encompassed a deeper understanding of international trade policies, networking opportunities with potential collaborators, and inspiration drawn from fellow successful women entrepreneurs. 

You were part of a national campaign in Mauritius for International Women’s Day. What can you tell us about this campaign and its key messages?

As part of a national campaign orchestrated by the Ministry of Gender Equity and Family Welfare in collaboration with Crayon Couleurs, our aim was to raise awareness on gender equality and celebrate women’s achievements across diverse fields. The campaign emphasized themes of breaking barriers, fostering inclusivity, and empowering women, with the hashtag #MorePowerToWoman

As we celebrate International Women’s Month, what would be your advice for aspiring women entrepreneurs?

For aspiring women entrepreneurs, my advice would be to believe in yourself, pursue your passions, continuously learn and adapt, seek mentorship and support networks, and don’t be afraid to take calculated risks. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and remember that resilience and perseverance are key qualities for success in entrepreneurship.
