Building Mauritius, Inspiring Africa: Tayelamay Group’s Construction Innovation

Across Africa, rapid urbanization and population growth are fueling an urgent demand for quality housing and infrastructure. This escalating need comes alongside challenges such as limited skilled labor, tight timelines, and rising costs, prompting the construction sector to rethink traditional methods. Within this dynamic landscape, Tayelamay Group —a leading construction player based in Mauritius—is pioneering a new era defined by speed, precision, and uncompromising quality.

Mauritius’ strategic position as a bridge between Africa and Asia situates it uniquely to influence the continent’s construction evolution. Leveraging this vantage point, TayelamayGroup is spearheading technological innovations that address both local and regional demands. The company’s ambitious vision is to industrialize construction processes without succumbing to standardization—accelerating delivery while enhancing quality and value.

At the core of Tayelamay’s transformation are two groundbreaking technologies: monolithic construction and Building Information Modelling (BIM). Monolithic construction involves pouring an entire building’s structural frame—walls and slabs—in a single operation using high-precision aluminum formwork. This method, deployed on a major 1,000-home project for the National Social Land Development Company (NSLD), enabled Tayelamay to achieve a remarkable pace of 36 homes per week, significantly cutting timelines without sacrificing quality.

“We faced a paradigm shift,” explains Hemant Kumar Dursun, Chief Operating Officer. “Monolithic construction required more than new equipment—it demanded retraining, rigorous quality control, and a long-term mindset. Our success has built local expertise, placing Tayelamay Group at the forefront of the industry.”

Complementing this, BIM technology allows precise pre-construction modeling of every aspect of a project’s lifecycle. Current projects feature millimeter-accurate integration of plumbing, electrical, and ventilation systems directly into formwork via GPS and total station data, minimizing errors and accelerating assembly.

This dual approach—melding monolithic techniques with BIM—is reshaping Mauritius’ construction landscape. Coupled with a fleet of advanced machinery and self-sufficient concrete production, Tayelamay’s model breaks away from conventional construction paradigms, setting new industry standards.

Project Head Avinash Soonarane highlights the human dimension of this shift: “Introducing BIM and monolithic methods was a collective journey involving hands-on training, pilot projects, and continuous leadership engagement. This structured support has fostered new skills, team cohesion, and pride in building differently.”

Mauritius itself plays a pivotal role within Africa’s growing infrastructure needs. As a regional investment and logistics hub, the island connects Indian expertise and capital with African markets hungry for development. Tayelamay’s experience and innovations position it well to support projects that meet rising housing demand while adhering to sustainable practices.

Founded in 1991 by engineer Sada Tayelamay, the Group initially focused on public works but has expanded to prestigious private ventures including hotels, clinics, luxury residences, and social housing. With a workforce of 1,200 and continuous investment in innovation, Tayelamay recently completed 800 homes in 18 months and delivered landmark projects like the Civil Service College in Réduit, inaugurated in 2024 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Today, Tayelamay Group exemplifies how visionary industrial strategy, cutting-edge technology, and sustainable development can converge to transform the construction sector—not only in Mauritius but as a model for Africa’s evolving infrastructure ambitions.
