MauBank has reinforced its commitment to sustainable development through a strategic investment in renewable energy infrastructure with the commissioning of a new photovoltaic carport at its Head Office. The initiative reflects the Bank’s
commitment to embedding environmental responsibility within its own operations while contributing to Mauritius’ transition towards a greener, more resilient and low-carbon economy. Representing an investment in a 66 kWp photovoltaic system, the new facility accommodates 22 vehicles and features four electric vehicle charging stations.
Designed around a butterfly canopy, the structure has been engineered to optimise the orientation and exposure of the photovoltaic panels, improving solar energy capture throughout the day. Connected to the Central Electricity Board (CEB) grid, the system is expected to
generate approximately 80 MWh of clean electricity annually, supporting the Bank’s operational energy requirements. The canopy has also been designed to withstand wind gusts of up to 280 km/h, reflecting the importance of resilience in infrastructure development within the Mauritian context.
The project is expected to avoid approximately 60 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, equivalent to the carbon sequestration capacity of around 2,700 trees, reinforcing MauBank’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of its operations while contributing to the country’s low-carbon transition.
More than an infrastructure project, the photovoltaic carport reflects MauBank’s commitment to embedding sustainability within its own operations while contributing to Mauritius’ transition towards a lower-carbon economy.
Sanraj Luximon, Head of Sustainability & Corporate Strategy at MauBank, said:
“This project demonstrates how organisations can actively contribute to Mauritius’ energy transition while embedding Environmental, Social and Governance principles into their own operations. It represents three important transitions shaping the future of our country: the
energy transition through renewable electricity generation, the mobility transition by supporting electric vehicles, and the workplace transition through the development of sustainable and future-ready infrastructure.”
Beyond generating renewable electricity, the facility also supports the growing adoption of electric mobility by making charging infrastructure more accessible. By integrating renewable electricity generation with electric vehicle charging facilities, MauBank is helping create an environment where more sustainable choices become easier and more practical.
Building on this commitment, Issa Soormally, Officer-in-Charge of MauBank, said:
“This photovoltaic carport reflects the direction MauBank has chosen to take as we continue to integrate sustainability into the way we operate. More so, the Mauritius National Budget 2026 2027 rightly reinforces the strategic importance of renewable energy, energy resilience and sustainable economic development. At a time when global energy markets continue to experience volatility and electricity costs remain under pressure, we believe businesses have an important role to play in strengthening national resilience through practical investments that deliver long-term value.
As an institution, we believe we have a responsibility to create the conditions that encourage more sustainable choices. The photovoltaic carport is not simply about providing charging facilities. It is about supporting the transition towards cleaner mobility by making the adoption of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles more practical and accessible. This approach extends beyond our infrastructure. Our employees have access to a preferential Green Car Loan at a fixed rate of 2.90% to encourage the purchase of electric vehicles, complemented by green financing solutions for photovoltaic systems and energy-efficient construction. Together, these initiatives reflect our commitment to encouraging the wider adoption of more sustainable practices, beginning within our own organisation.”
While the photovoltaic carport is an investment in renewable energy, it is equally an investment in the future of the Bank and the customers it serves. By strengthening the resilience and sustainability of its own operations, MauBank is reinforcing the foundations of an institution that is better equipped to support individuals, businesses and the wider economy through the opportunities and challenges of tomorrow. It reflects the Bank’s belief that meaningful progress begins with strong foundations and that being “Le partenaire de votre progress”, means
continuously investing in the capabilities, resilience and innovation that enable customers to move forward with confidence.
As Mauritius continues its journey towards a more sustainable economy, MauBank remains committed to supporting national priorities through responsible banking, innovation and practical investments that create long-term environmental, social and economic value.
