Emtel and Landscope Mauritius unite over 125 volunteers for World CleanUp Day 2026, collecting over 1.6 tonnes of waste

Emtel led the Ébène Community Clean-Up Campaign on Friday, 18 September, as part of World CleanUp Day 2026, bringing together Landscope Mauritius, the Currimjee Foundation and other corporate partners based in Ébène Cybercity. The initiative saw businesses come together to take practical action, support environmental efforts and help keep the area cleaner, while promoting greater awareness of responsible waste management and sustainability.

A united corporate effort for a cleaner Ébène

Coordinated alongside expert partner Mission Verte, the two-hour morning campaign mobilised more than 125 enthusiastic participants. This dedicated coalition included staff members proudly representing Emtel and the Currimjee Group, proving that individual hands joined together can create a profound collective impact.

Over 1.6 tonnes of waste collected and sorted

By the time the clean-up concluded at midday, volunteers had successfully collected an impressive total of 1,625.5 kg of waste across the cybercity. Through diligent sorting and specialised collection streams, the initiative achieved significant environmental milestones:

  • 193 kg of electronic waste (e-waste): Collected via a dedicated e-waste drive conducted by Emtel on the day, addressing the growing challenge of obsolete technology disposal.
  • 72.5 kg of recyclable waste: Diverted directly through Mission Verte to be processed and recycled.
  • 1,360 kg of non-recyclable general waste: Safely cleared from public spaces.

Beyond the physical cleanup of the cybercity streets, the core achievement of the day lay in raising vital public awareness, diverting reusable materials away from landfills, and actively contributing to a cleaner Mauritius.

A commitment that goes beyond one day

Shezaad Auchoybur, Manager – Sustainability & Social Impact at Emtel, highlighted the importance of making environmental responsibility an ongoing commitment rather than something limited to a single event: “This clean-up is not a one-off activity for us but rather forms an integral part of our ongoing sustainability commitment towards responsible waste management and environmental stewardship. We are immensely proud to see businesses across the Ébène Cybercity united with such energy today. Whether through our regular cleanup activities conducted across both Mauritius and Rodrigues Islands, or our core projects promoting e-waste recycling, we remain dedicated to embedding sustainability into everything we do and building lasting, positive habits for our community.”

Organisers noted that the strong turnout from Ébène’s corporate community underscores a growing recognition that workplace hubs have a shared duty to protect local ecosystems. As the September-long observance of World Cleanup Day concludes, Emtel and its partners hope the success of this campaign will serve as a catalyst for ongoing environmental consciousness, encouraging individuals and companies alike to rethink their everyday consumption and waste habits.
