Logidis announces a technological partnership with Uber to address licensed Mauritian taxi drivers’ challenges
Since 2006, Logidis has partnered with the licensed taxi community to include them in the digitalisation process of its services.
Logidis has operated the ala-lila online booking platform since 2006, under the name taxiservices.mu, in collaboration with taxi drivers’ associations and always in consultation with the relevant authorities.
Nearly two decades later, we are taking the next step: upgrading our ala-lila service with a proven technology to give licensed Mauritian taxi drivers the competitive edge they need in an increasingly connected society and growing tourism market.
Logidis has chosen Uber’s technological platform to provide a future-proof solution that will give more options to Mauritian licensed taxi drivers, making them more visible to international clients and helping them obtain fair earnings whilst keeping their full independence as traditional taxi services.
Under this ‘win-win’ arrangement for taxi drivers and Logidis alike, a new franchise model will be introduced, which would differ from the approach proposed in the past, and which is similar to that of some European markets where Uber’s database is being used successfully, such as Malta and Hungary. The franchise model in Mauritius will work as follows:
- Logidis is the sole operator. We maintain full operational control, managing all driver contracts and answering to Mauritian regulators.
- Logidis ensures via its screening process that the platform remains exclusively for licensed PSVL Taxi holders.
- Mauritian rates and zones are respected by prioritising licensed taxis in line with the existing national framework, taking into account existing arrangements at specific locations like Airport, Port and Hotels. We value the Mauritian taxi mode of operation; we are just modernising our technological platform.
- No taxi driver can subscribe without obtaining a Certificate from Logidis, which is provided after a complete assessment and review of all valid documents from registered taxi drivers.
The opportunities for licensed taxi drivers
Logidis values the 20-year relationship with the licensed taxi community, and would like to address their concerns by providing:
- An alternative to our current operating system
- Low service fees and strategic investment to develop the rider base
- Access to international tourists through a globally-recognised platform
- Access to all licensed taxi drivers provided their documentation is valid
- A solution against waiting time and dead mileage issues
- A technological solution to their safety issues
- A professionalised framework that distinguishes them from illegal operators
- Better visibility and more ride opportunities
- Same partnership which Logidis taxi drivers have trusted for 20 years
We have presented this initiative to the Ministry of Land Transport and Light Rail and remain committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure this evolution benefits the entire licensed taxi community and strengthens Mauritius’ tourism offering.
