Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Dr. Navin Ramgoolam has launched on Thursday, September 3, the Bank of Mauritius (BoM) statistical data platform BOMStats that places user-friendliness at the centre of the Bank’s efforts to expand access to official statistical data. The platform offers user-friendly data to find, understand and use while streamlining access to its official statistics, self-service analytics, robust API functionality as well as structured and interoperable data sharing.

The Prime Minister made the following observation: “This new data portal marks a significant milestone. Indeed, our country is entering a new era of data production, dissemination and transparency where good economic policy begins with good statistics, allowing us to measure economic realities accurately. When data is compiled according to internationally recognized standards, it allows: Public institutions to speak with clarity; Markets to form expectations with confidence; and Citizens to assess progress on the basis of facts rather than perceptions.”

He calls the BoMstats an important milestone, forming part of efforts in modernisation of the BoM in terms of greater transparency, better governance and evidence-based decision-making. For the Prime Minister, the new portal adheres to the Government’s vision to spearhead digital transformation, modernise the public services while at the same time making information more accessible, where in an ever-changing world, data has emerged as one of the nation’s most valuable resources as economies are increasingly shaped by digital technologies, global connectivity, financial innovation and a rapidly evolving market, among others.

The Prime Minister also underscored the importance of strengthening the country’s international credibility, investor and rating confidence, financial stability, institutional governance and access to international markets, while BOMStats forms part of the Government’s efforts to enhance access to high-quality economic and financial information. He also announced that Statistics Mauritius will soon undertake a comprehensive revision of the national accounts system, in line with the latest United Nations System of National Accounts (SNA), where the jurisdiction aims to become the first African country to adopt the SNA 2025.

He believes that statistical reforms send a strong signal to investors, development partners and rating agencies that Mauritius adheres to the highest standards of statistical transparency, data quality and international best practices.

On the other hand, the Governor at the Bank of Mauritius, Dr Priscilla Muthoora Thakoor underlined that the launch of BOMStats constitutes an important milestone to promote transparency, buttress statistical governance and embrace digitisation. The event, the Governor remarked, holds particular significance for the central bank that turned on September 1.

She commented, “BOMStats embodies our belief that reliable, timely, and accessible data supports better decisions across society. For a central bank, data is vital to sound policy. It supports the assessment of inflation, financial stability, external vulnerabilities, and payment system resilience. It also helps strengthen communication and institutional accountability. BOMStats will serve as a central point of reference for the monetary, financial, external sector, and payment statistics compiled by the Bank of Mauritius. A substantial portion of the data currently published in the Bank’s Monthly Statistical Bulletin is already reflected in the platform, making it a practical gateway to the statistics most frequently used by our stakeholders.”

The Governor also added that BOMStats, through an intuitive interface, interactive dashboards and downloadable time series, will help make information easier to find, interpret and use while, at the same time, the Central Bank will continue on its path to expand the portal over time, further enhance transparency and support evidence-based analysis and informed public debate.

For Dr. Muthoora Thakoor, the adherence in March 2026 to the Special Data Dissemination Standard Plus, considered to be the highest tier of the IMF’s Data Standards Initiative, underscored the country’s commitment to data quality, timelines, integrity and transparency.

She underscores, “BOMStats gives practical effect to that commitment. It is built on the African Development Bank’s Open Data Platform and supported by the adoption of Statistical Data and Metadata eXchange (SDMx), a trusted global standard for official statistics. As a matter of fact, it strengthens interoperability, enables data and metadata sharing in a structured, standardised, and machine-readable manner. This will improve reporting to international organisations, enhance consistency across data-producing agencies, and help users retrieve, compare, and reuse information with greater confidence.”

With this launch, the Central Bank becomes the first in Africa to deploy the Open Data Platform (ODP) 2.0 technology, which enables dissemination in the SDMX format. BOMStats, which has been operationalised by a cross-departmental internal team at the Bank with support from the African Development Bank and the Statistics Department of the International Monetary Fund, sets a new benchmark for efficient statistical data sharing on the continent.
