New leadership & fresh vision: Indian Business Council, Mauritius

The Indian Business Council (IBC), Mauritius, marked a significant milestone at its 4th Annual General Meeting on 14 April 2025 at Royal Greens, Moka. The event served as a valuable opportunity for members to reflect on the council’s journey, exchange perspectives, and anticipate future directions.

Since its founding in 2021, the IBC has flourished into a vital hub connecting businesses, entrepreneurs, and professionals across diverse sectors. With robust connections spanning Mauritius, India, and Africa, the IBC continues its mission of forging collaborative bonds, fostering meaningful cross-border partnerships, and nurturing valuable relationships.

This year’s AGM held particular significance, celebrating past accomplishments whilst heralding a new era with the election of the 2025 Management Committee. The IBC proudly announced the appointment of Mr Jayasankar Seshadri as its new President, a decision reached through unanimous consensus by the incoming committee. Mr Seshadri brings a compelling vision, extensive experience, and a profound commitment characterised by integrity, transparency, passion, and an infectious enthusiasm.

With the new leadership team now in place, the IBC is poised to enhance its support for its members in every way it can. Alongside Mr Seshadri, the Management Committee comprises Mr Sarad Kumar Baranwal (Vice President), Mr Amit Gupta (Secretary), Mr Ajay Vij (Assistant Secretary), Mr Ritesh Abbi (Treasurer), and Mr R Srinivasa Sankar (Assistant Treasurer). The committee also welcomes Mrs Meenakshi Saxena, Mr Praveen Aggarwal, Mr Saurav Chatterjee, Mr Sudheer Kumar, and Mr Vivek Mathur.

The event was further graced by the presence of His Excellency Shri Anurag Shrivastav, the High Commissioner of India to Mauritius, who engaged with the members and extended his congratulations to the newly appointed Management Committee following the AGM.

A palpable sense of optimism and energy surrounds the IBC as it looks forward to a year characterised by innovative ideas, impactful initiatives, and stronger connections within the business community.

In his inaugural address as President, Mr Jayasankar Seshadri expressed his deep gratitude and vision for the future: “I am deeply honoured by the trust you have placed in me by electing me as President of the Indian Business Council (IBC), Mauritius. I accept this responsibility with humility and a deep commitment to advancing our collective interests and further strengthening the Indo-Mauritian business partnership.”

Mr Seshadri also acknowledged the foundational work of his predecessors: “The IBC has evolved into a respected and credible institution thanks to the dedication and vision of those who came before us. I would like to formally acknowledge and express my sincere appreciation to Mr Pradeep Malik and Dr Suresh Nanda, along with their respective Management Committees, for their invaluable contributions in laying a solid foundation for the IBC.”

Highlighting the strength of the IBC’s diverse membership, Mr Seshadri emphasised the power of collaboration: “We are a diverse and dynamic community of professionals, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders representing a broad range of sectors. It is through our shared expertise, collaboration, and strategic focus that we can unlock new opportunities and respond effectively to the challenges of a rapidly changing business environment.”

Looking ahead, Mr Seshadri outlined four key strategic priorities that will guide the IBC’s efforts in the months ahead:

  1. Strengthening Networks and Building Strategic Partnerships: “IBC will create impactful events and digital platforms to foster meaningful connections, collaboration, and business growth amongst members. We are also exploring monthly informal meet-ups to encourage ongoing dialogue, with more details to be shared soon.”
  2. Advocacy and Policy Influence: “IBC is committed to advocating for policies that address common business challenges and contribute to the broader Mauritian economy. Guided by our vision of ‘Connecting Economies’, we will work closely with governments, regulators, and business associations to ensure our voice is heard and respected.”
  3. Advancing Women in Business: “Promoting women in business is both an economic necessity and a strategic priority. We will collaborate with the Economic Development Board and other stakeholders to launch initiatives that support women entrepreneurs, whilst addressing barriers like permit requirements to unlock untapped potential.”
  4. Collaboration with Other Business Chambers: “My predecessors have established key partnerships with local and international business chambers, creating strong frameworks for collaboration. I plan to build on this by revitalising existing ties and strengthening the India-Mauritius-Africa business corridor.”

Mr Seshadri concluded his address with a call to action: “I call upon each of you to actively engage with the IBC. Your participation, perspectives, and ideas are central to the Council’s success. Together, we can create a vibrant, inclusive, and forward-thinking organisation that serves as a powerful voice for the business community. Let us also make it a priority to grow our membership. A larger, more diverse member base strengthens our credibility, influence, and ability to shape the Indo-Mauritian economic dialogue. Let us move forward, united in purpose and confident in our collective strength.”

The Indian Business Council, under the new leadership of Mr Jayasankar Seshadri, reaffirms its dedication to building strong connections, supporting women in business, understanding the challenges faced by its members, and strengthening collaborations with various business chambers to achieve collective growth and further enhance the Indo-Mauritian economic partnership.
