“Mauritius Rum”: The Geographical Indication now officially established

A defining moment for Mauritius and its rum industry: the Mauritius Rum Geographical Indication (GI) is now officially established. Building on a designation created to protect and celebrate the island’s distinctive rum, this recognition affirms the authenticity, quality and savoir-faire behind every bottle, while giving Mauritian rum a stronger place on the international stage.

Alan Oxenham, Chief Marketing Director d’Oxenham speaking on behalf of Bertrand Thevenau, Chairman of MEXA & CEO of Omnicane properties, retail & brands

A mark of Mauritian excellence

Mauritius Rum is a commitment and the foundation of everything we do. It certifies that every bottle bearing the seal is Mauritian from field to cork. The cane grows in our volcanic soil, fermentation and aging take place on the island, and every stage is controlled, traced and verified. The use of artificial colourings is strictly prohibited, while sugar content is limited to no more than 20g/L, preserving the product’s natural tasting profile and authenticity.

Eligibility is limited to rums produced on the main island of Mauritius, reinforcing the certification’s direct connection to the terroir. The GI is the pact that unites seven local distilleries – Distillerie de Labourdonnais, Domaine de Saint Aubin, Oxenham Craft Distillery, Medine Distillery, Rhumerie de Chamarel, Omnicane Distillery and Grays – around one shared standard: guaranteed origin, controlled quality and Mauritian craftsmanship. Each distillery keeps its own character; all of them answer the same promise. This is what allows one island to speak in many voices, without ever losing its signature.

“Each distillery is committed to upholding the same standards and working together under a common framework, in accordance with a protected set of specifications agreed and approved by all.”

By guaranteeing the traceability, authenticity and quality of the product, the GI strengthens the credibility of Mauritian rum and creates new opportunities for export, while enhancing its competitiveness in global markets.

The global rum market, valued at more than USD 15 billion, continues to experience strong growth, particularly across the United States, Europe and Asia. With demand for premium and craft rums on the rise, Mauritius is increasingly establishing itself as a destination for high-quality rum production.

The Mauritius Rum GI now joins other prestigious Mauritian designations, including “Mauritius Sugars” and “Limon Rodrigues”, further contributing to the recognition and promotion of the island’s products. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to showcase Mauritius’ unique terroir and expertise, strengthening the country’s position as a producer of high-quality food and beverage products on the international stage.

The pillars behind the promise

Quality. The quality of Mauritius Rum begins in Mauritius itself: its organic resources, savoir-faire and tropical climate. Every stage helps preserve the link between the raw material, the hands that shape it and the rum that reaches the glass. Through its GI, Mauritius Rum gives this craft a clear promise: a guaranteed origin, controlled quality and full traceability.

“Our land is volcanic and rich in minerals. The sugarcane thrives in this unique terroir, producing exceptional raw material that lies at the heart of our rums.”

Diversity. Mauritius Rum reveals itself through a wide range of styles. Pure cane juice, cane syrup and molasses each open a different path. Pot stills, columns, various fermentations, casks selection and blends options bring further depth to this diversity. Each house brings its own eye, hand and accent. Together, they create a living collection where fresh, floral, fruity and structured profiles all express different facets of the island.

Innovation. Mauritius has a long history of sugarcane and a growing culture of premium rum. This gives Mauritius Rum a spirit of openness, curiosity and creativity. Its producers explore raw material, fermentation, casks, and blends with a fresh and contemporary approach.

Seven distilleries. One island. One signature. Mauritius Rum brings together the many ways Mauritius expresses itself through rum, under a label that guarantees every drop was grown, fermented, distilled and aged on the island.

A brand with a distinctive identity

Mauritius Rum goes beyond its role as a Geographical Indication to stand as a brand in its own right, with its own distinctive identity, values and promise. Designed to embody the character of Mauritian rum, the label brings together authenticity, craftsmanship and a spirit of excellence, creating a recognisable signature for locally-produced rums and a compelling identity on the international stage.
